This morning I smelled burning around my computer, my system froze up and I forced a shutdown. I have no idea why this might have happened as all was running fine until then.

When I tried to reboot after letting it cool for a while, I got nothing. Not even BIOS although peripherals like the keyboard lit up. The computer made two light clicks before doing nothing. No HDD activity and no beeps.

My main aim in posting here is primarily to find someone in the local area who is willing to help me see if the HDD is still accessible. If it has failed then I've lost quite a bit of stuff which is life. But I do have an assignment redraft on there I need access to immediately if it is still alive because the deadline is this Sunday.

So, is there anyone in the Itaewon Haebangcheon area or even near a subway stop in Seoul who would be willing to help me out today (Thursday) from 12?

If so, let me know through a pm here asap!

Cheers
Cool

update for those that I've been in touch with today:

Thanks to everyone for the help. It did indeed turn out that the HDD is safe so thank the good Lord for that. The motherboard seems to be fried somehow though. TOok the disk back to IT computer in Yongsan to their AS centre and they were superb. Not only did they check the disk, they let me email my assignment draft to myself and then told me that if the motherboard was indeed fried, they would come and pick up the PC from my house, fix it and return it all under the year warranty from when I bought it.

Pretty good

So, I have a dead but fixable PC and no loss of data. I'll sleep tonight Rolling Eyes

Yeesh... well I get this computer back after a 1 day turnaround at the shop. Cost me the grand total of W4000 to get a new motherboard. All looking good as I plug everything back in and boot up.

No monitor signal. Ah well, mustn't have connected the cable correctly. No it's in there good and tight. Hmm... well let's have a look inside. No issues there. Let's shut down and boot again.

Works fine so I go to put the cover back on and what the... the monitor loses its signal.

So, I get a monitor signal when the cover is off but if I put the cover back on the monitor goes blank and flashes at me. There's no cabling int he way. The cover is an easy release side cover and I can't for the life of me figure this one out.

Any ideas?

I have never had a mobo fry on me. It sounds almost like your Power Supply is pooched.

Well the southbridge went south so they replaced the board... according to my sources. I had to reinstall video drivers but yesterday and this morning, even with the cover off, it will just suddenly lose the monitor. THe power keeps on trucking though. I did try and restart it to get the monitor back but it restarted while it was booting up which worried me so it is just sitting here all silent while I work from the laptop. I'm not happy with it at all.

Just like a car, works fine til you send it in for a service... Evil or Very Mad

Can you believe they left two screws floating around under the mainboard? I found this out by toying around with it and heard something rattling under there. Loosened the board a lo and behold, two screws fell out.

Must have been causing problems with the graphics section of the board.

Yep...a short. Lucky it didn't re-fry it. Glad it's sorted.
