Korea's Competitiveness Hampered by Labor Relations
A fresh study confirms that Korea's competitiveness improved since last year, but the country came last in terms of labor-management relations among 60 countries for the third year running. It also dawdled near the bottom in terms of student-teacher ratio, policy consistency and openness to foreign cultures.

The Swiss International Institute for Management Development (IMD) reported Wednesday Korea came 29th out of 60 countries in terms of competitiveness, climbing six places since last year.

The country ranked last, and poor scores in
A. elementary school student-teacher ratio (54th),
B. sexual and racial discrimination (54th),
C. health spending to GDP (54th),
D. openness to foreign cultures (53rd),
E. suitability of college educations for the labor market (52nd) and
F. policy consistency (52nd).

In better news, Korea did place at or near the top of the list in terms of
A. broadband communication subscriber ratio (first),
B. broadband costs (second),
C. patent productivity (second) and
D. exchange rate stability (second).
