Just curious,
If/When you run out of sick days, if you're genuinely sick, can you stay home and just not get paid? Or, do they fire you?
I've already been sick once, went to work sick once, and feel a little under the weather today, but don't want to use up my second sick day if its going to F me over in the end.
If its just that I don't get paid, I can deal. But if I literally HAVE to go to work or else risk my job, then I can't deal.
Quick response would be appreciated.

Thanx

Andy

that should be covered in your contract, but as far as i'm concerned, they can't fire you for being sick.

Calling in sick is generally very much frowned on here. I wouldn't recommend it unless your condition is very serious (e.g. vomiting, diarrhea every half hour on the hour, too weak to get out of bed, etc.). It would be a good idea for you to see a doctor and get a note, too.

I went to work sick as a dog on Friday, but called in sick today. Boss was very annoyed that I dared to get sick. Too bad, I am literally coughing every 30 seconds, my throat's raw as hell, I cannot speak.

So the other foreign teacher at my hagwon called earlier asking me if I wanted him to take my classes. I said, "Huh?" *Cough, cough*. Obviously the wonjung has told him that he is gonna have to teach my classes if I don't show. Anyway, takes me about two minutes to compose myself and stop coughing, and he goes "Oh, you really are sick. Oh, so should I take your classes?" So I say, "No, I don't want you to. If you want to, and the wonjung is gonna pay you overtime, then that's fine. But I am sick, I am taking a sick day, I ain't coming.

I know what the wonjung wants. He wants us to sort it between ourselves so it doesn't cost him anything. Well, where I come from if a teacher is ill, someone is paid to replace him or classes are cancelled. And considering I contractually have the right to be sick and have a sick day, I don't see why I should take it any differently.

Oh, and on the Friday; I called and told him to cancell my morning (mothers) class, as I was too ill to get up early, but that I'd drag myself in for the afternoon classes. So I went in the afternoon with a temperature of 38, sicker than I am now (though minus the constant cough), and my wonjung goes to me "why did you want me to cancel the morning classes? Did you have a fight with your wife?" I said, "What?" And looked at him dumbly. The guy truly couldn't see that I was sick. I said "Feel My Head!"

The guy tells so many lies, he honestly can't believe that when someone else tells him something it might be the truth.

And what are these damn shots the doctors keep giving me in this place. I'm inclined to think it is water and that the doctors just have needle fetishes... I don't get it.

Out of sicks days and get sick = stay home on your coin (i.e. not paid) unless your contract says otherwise.

I really don't mean to be cold, but you are here, not there and it doesn't matter what happens back there.

The idea of a substitute teacher has not caught on here yet. How can a hakwon have a substitute teacher? What would he/she do most days when all the regular teachers are in class? Just sit around doing nothing? I don't think so.

You also are confusing the free public education system with the business that is a hakwon. Your students have paid X amount of money for a certain amount of class time this month. Kind of like when you buy a carton of eggs at the grocery store. You get home and some of the eggs are missing. You are not happy. You didn't get what you paid for. Students who don't get what they pay for go elsewhere.

If you really are too sick to work today, you probably should volunteer to make up the classes this Saturday.

Like I said, if it's serious, go to a doctor and get the excuse.

"A little under the weather"? He's coming to Dave's for advice? He can't be all that sick. Yeah, if it was the U.S. I'd be making damn sure I used all my sick days one way or the other.

This ain't the U.S.

He asked about what's expected and what kind of consequences to expect. I don't know his boss, but I haven't met or heard of a Korean hogwon boss yet that doesn't have a conniption over every single sick day.

He has the sniffles. It's probably not worth the aggravation he'll get from his director, IMHO. I wouldn't do it.

His call, though.
