|

I'll keep this brief.
I work at a University here in Seoul. I also tend to play music, recording and what not.
A small independent record label in Korea has chanced upon my recordings and want to release an album here. It'll be distributed in 15 or so shops and over the internet. I do not stand the make money, rather obviously. This is not 'Thriller'.
Now. I'm on an E2 visa...two friends of mine have, in the past two months, been deported for not having a special performance visa...one was an E2 visa teacher and did accept payment, one was on a tourist visa and tended to take payments...Oh, yeah, I play a lot of shows here, there's a charge at the door but that for the other acts, I don't take money...
Basically, am I heading for trouble if I continue to record, feature in a Korean music magazine like Hot Music and/or play more shows...
I'm not going to take payment for this, but suspect that won't rub with the Immigration dept.
Is it possible to change the visa so that I can teach as an E2 (making income) and perform on a C4 (i think that's the title)...do I declare it? Is it better to say and be denied than ride the bollock gauntlet that is "illegal working"? |

What exactly happened to your friends? Did immigration show up and bust them at a concert? |

One friend was stopped when trying to leave the country for a new tourist visa (...) and asked why they had played these shows, why they had appeared on TV and several magazines...
The other friend, I'm still not sure, it was as recent as this week, but I'm assuming it was either at a show or his workplace...
Being busted mid show would be a buzzkiller. Although a good story for the eventual autobiography, published by Random House, available 2062 at all good bookstores.

Basically, can I combine the two? With permission from my University, could it be done? |

I *think* you can but it will be difficult. |

How so? Several professors here do television work...is the problem with the employer or the immigration dept.?
Will it help if I stress I stand to make absolutely NOTHING from this endeavour? |

When I was working last year, still, for my husband and asked immi for permission to do another thing to help a friend out at her hagwon (I have a F-2-1 visa), the immi were reluctant to give it to me because they said they don't like to give out second job permission to people, in case there are others who don't have a first job who want to do it.
In any case, you need a contract or an agreement. If you can get 1. a release letter from your university to say that the hours you will be doing this other thing won't affect your job schedule or performance and 2. an agreement from the record company that shows your hours of work and payment (if there's nothing, make sure you clearly state that), then take it to immi and see what happens. Yo might stand a chance of getting it because you are not going to make any money out of it.
Bon chance! |

Well, technically it is illegal for teachers to volunteer their time to help orphans, so I can't see how they'd let you get by with doing that for free, either. |

My god. Has anyone ever actually been busted at an orphanage? That would be at once the most tragic and hilarious thing ever.
The record label, I should add, is run by a 25 year old from her basement apartment...it is not a job...there is no contract, she just releases albums from artists she thinks are ace that play in Korea. So "record label" is putting it a bit strong.
It's not a self funded affair, she has taken the songs, asked permission to release them and that's that.
So, Tzechuk, it's certainly not along the lines of getting another job...no hours or anything!
This is more along the lines of validating an interest which, due to some freak of commerce, might make me in the region of 30,000. And that's with success. |

Well, then you don't need to tell anyone anything, I think. It's just a hobby........ but hey what do I know... still, be careful. |

You know, I did not know that. Man, I would love/hate to see that happen. I must say if that was me doign the volunteering it'd be on every news station i could muster.
Actually I knew of someone who was busted for "something" (drink related), the fact that some people at an orphanage came "and testified" on his behalf saved him any jail time. |
