Today is one of the days I work at my "not so good" academy. Over the years I have been poked, dong chimmed, called names and even kicked right in the berries by a kindy boy. Today however some grade two student hit me in the face when I entered class.

I said "hadgimayo". Then when I was opening the door for another student he whacked me again. I turned around and caught his arm as he was going for a third whack. I twisted it genlty but with force around his back and made him sit down.

All class he was rubbing his wrist acting like it was really a big deal. I was going to say "Are you okay?", but there was no way I wanted to sound apologetic. I actually use a lot more force on students trying to get them to say they love me.

After two hours the director has a brief conversation with my Korean co-teacher. She asked me if I twisted the students wrist. I said "Yes because he hit me in the face two times and I had to make him stop."

It turns out the student had been pushed out of the academy car the other day and spraigned (sp?) his wrist. So the mom was a little angry at the academy and now at me.

The KT then told the director and called the students mom. Everything was kosher and the mom is happy.

After My fifth class:

KT "The student did not mean to hit you in the face."
Me "Yes, he did"

KT "He was just playing by himself and accidentally hit you."
Me "No he hit me two times."

KT "Anyways his mom is not angry with you anymore."
Me " I don't really care, if I was a Korean Teacher he would never have
done it."

KT "He was just playing."
Me "Why didn't he stop after I told him not to do that anymore?"

KT "I cant express it in English"
Me "I can, he was being a little brat!"

Kimchieluver,
I hope tomorrow is much better for you. There do seem to be times when students will do things to foreign teachers that they would never do to Korean teachers.

Well, Teachers' Day is coming.
Perhaps, students will be very nice and polite tomorrow.

RR and I disagree about whether teachers and students should be "friends", but the middle ground is whether or not the students are your "friend" or not, they have to respect you and know there is a line.

Sounds like your little trolls aren't quite sure where that line lies.
Maybe you need to remind them. (or maybe he is just a little shit).

Although you were angry at being hit it probably was not the best move to twist his arm... look at removing the child or yourself from those situations where you feel yourself losing control.

I had a classic today. This wee sebastian who constantly spoils an otherwise good class took it upon himself to pour a 250ml bottle of water into his desk! I caught him at it and up-ended the desk on his pants so it looked like he had wet himself. Then I sent him home.

I bet that was a long walk.

Ah, sweet revenge! Twisted Evil

Tell the director that where you come from, you beat the student's ass with a stick for doing something like that.

If the director says, "NO NO NO" then kindly tell him that he'll have to fire you and find a new teacher for spanking the student the next time he does that -- so it's in his (the boss's) best financial interest to make damn sure that the student doesn't do that again.

Well, I'm not good with the kiddies but here's my method....I had a little bastard who flipped me off and said "puck you teacher." I then dragged him by the ear to every class and made him tell every single student and Korean teacher in the hagwon"Hi my name is Kevin and I am stupid." Kids laughing at him...he was utterly humiliated...thank god his irrate mother pulled him out of the hagwon....less headache for me (well, minus a ticked off boss) Twisted Evil Twisted Evil
Normaly I don't lose control but telling a teacher to "puck off" when your twelve-years old is utterly disrespectful and deserves every brand of humiliation coming to him/her.

Drawing the kids face as a target on the board, and then inviting the other kids to throw the sticky ball at it in a sort of competition will is always effective humiliation for the younger agegroups.

That could be one of your big problems right there. Using the honorific to a child who is acting up is unheard of. You'll never hear a Korean adult say that to a child.

There's no need to put up with this sort of crap whatsoever. Throw him out of class the first time he hits you; if the Korean staff won't give you any support there's no need to feel bad about humiliating him - better he learn when he's young that there are certain things you just don't do. I've just started taking matters into my own hands, and things work a lot better in at least some cases. Yesterday I kicked a kid out for the last 20 minutes of the lesson and the KT came by all confused as to why I wouldn't let him back. I just told her (it's quite possible she couldn't understand me anyway as her comprehension is terrible) that he wasn't learning anything inside so he could stay outside. There's just no need to put up with such rubbish because the businessman who cares not the least about education might lose a customer.

If I was ever struck by a student(purposely) I would have marched the brat to the directors/owners office and told them brat child would not be allowed in my class until I got an apology from the parents.

Makes you wonder where a kid thinks it can get away with hitting an adult.
