Forgive me for not posting this in Q and A, but I think more people hang out here. Embarassed

I am looking for a reasonably good hotel in Seoul in a good sight-seeing neighborhood. I have a friend coming from the States who will only be in town for a few nights. We don't need anything fancy. We are thinking about the $100 plus range for two (twin-share).

Hotel Koreana is about 160,000. I thought the rooms were nicer than the Hyatt, it's right behind City Hall. Is that central enough?

You won't consider a love hotel? They're cheaper, and some of them can be really, REALLY nice.

But maybe your friend is uncomfortable listening to people screaming in ecstacy all night.

Yeah, I have made that suggestion, but I am afraid the concept doesn't translate well into "American".

I can't suggest a place to try, but often going to hotel in person, telling them what kind of room you want, for how long and how much you're prepared to pay sometimes works a charm.
I can't think of any reason why right now would be a particularly big tourist season so there may be a lot of empty beds.

Good idea, if I lived in Seoul. I'll be meeting him there in the afternoon- with only a couple of days, I want to have a room secured.

The Royal and the President are both nice, too. In the W140,000 range. Royal is in Myung-dong, President is right behind the Seoul Plaza Hotel. I think it and the Chosun are in the 280-360,000 range, I know the Hyatt, Shilla, Intercontinental and Hilton sure are. Why do I know this stuff?

Yeah, the Shilla is really really expensive. My friend is here to give a talk at Korea University, and they are putting him up there- we checked into it, but the rates are in the 4-5 hundred thousand range.

I'll check out the Royal and the President, as well as the Koreana.

Any other suggestions?

What about the Hamilton, some suggested that one.

Check out:

These sites are recommended by the Seoul city tourism page. An old GF used to swear by the Human Touch Villa when she came to Seoul. I've never stayed there, however.

Okay, one other question- What neighborhood is the best place to stay?

I know there are lots of hotels near the Kyobo building in Kangnam which is fairly central, though I'd think for tourism, something in Jongno would be better.

Try somewhere at least close to downtown. Gangnam is not for tourists.

Gangnam isn't such a bad place to stay. Hop on line 3 and you're pretty much in the core in 30 minutes. If you're into shopping, Gangnam is good. Apkujeong, Gangnam, Coex, Shinsaegae at the Nambu bus terminal. There's the Olympic park, Lotteworld...

Anywhere around City Hall / Kyobo / Jong-no / Seoul Station is great for walking around and sight-seeing. All of those places are within 10 mins walk of each other anyway.
