i was just wondering what some teachers out there do to make their classroom more interesting. sometimes the designated curriculum (if it exists at all) lacks a certain 'je ne sais quoi', ya know? especially if you're teaching kids.

with adults sometimes bringing some interesting topics to class will get the ball rolling but with kids...

presently, i'm trying some pop songs. they seem to be enjoying it. but you need to have yourself prepared. if they're older than 10, simply showing up with a song won't get them going. but if it's properly presented the kids really enjoy it.
any other ideas?

I work with kids and have no textbook, so I often use songs like you. I do cloze activities and sometimes cut up the songs and have the kids put them together like a puzzle.

I get ideas from books as well. Some helpful books for me have been those by Penny Ur ('Five-minute Activities', 'Grammar Practice Activities', and 'Discussions that Work').

I have also found the Boggle's World Site to be extremely helpful. It goes along with a Scott Foresman ESL textbook too I believe.

The Idea Cookbook at this site is great too.

There are so many things you can do as supplemental activities. Without knowing or using your textbook and/or what your kids are studying it's hard to suggest things. I imagine that you would want to build upon or reinforce things in your textbook..and since I don't know what your kids are studying I guess I'll stop with those sugestions.
