Well, I am back stateside, licking my wounds and preparing to return to Korea. As I was looking at possible jobs to apply for, I started wondeirng about references.

Does anybody know whether employers, especially Uni's, c heck references at all? Given the ugly end to all of my jobs in Korea, I have about as much chance of getting a positive reference as I do growing a tail. That said, I had no problem getting offerred jobs, and wonder whether anyone really cares about references if you have a good picture.

What are your experiences, especially at universities? I have scads of good recomendation letters from teaching jobs in the US, and I can get good references from people I know in Korea (but not former employers). How have you worked around this type of situation?

Nobody replied yet so I'll give it a go, but since this is a "return to Korea" for you, my information might not be so helpful.

I don't know about university gigs. I'd assume that you should have references and that they should be willing to speak a good word for you. (Obviously).

With regard to the jobs you see posted on eslcafe.com and places like it, references seem to be optional. I had one recruiter tell me he needed them, while the other few dozen schools and agencies haven't alluded to them at all.

Not sure about specifics for university, but in general, get something in writing from the people who will give you references. Providing those with your resume, should prevent the potential employer from calling anyone else.
