Interesting Korea Herald article on how American newspaper (media) perceive SK, and how SK newspaper (media) perceive the US.

Short answer is that US opinion of SK is improving, while SK opinion of US is plummeting (esp since Shrub was elected)

Weird survey...

Typical editor in US:

"South Korea? Oh, yeah, they're the good guys against those North Korea dudes. Yeah, they're OK. But hey, wasn't there some sort of protest over there a while back? Oh heck, they just hate Bush... I do too. They're OK."

60% of typical US citizens:

"We really shouldn't be wasting our time over there. We keep hearing about protests and anti-Americanism over there. Perhaps it's best that we just leave. Yeah, North Korea is a problem, but maybe it's better for us to stop protecting countries that treat us rudely rather than closing so many of our own local bases down."

And the kicker quote from the article:

"Influencing Korean editors' negative perception of America include the U.S. unilateral invasion of Iraq, the death of two Korean girls hit by a vehicle driven by an American soldier, U.S. troop cutbacks in Korea, rampant school violence in the United States, the idea that Americans' anti-North Korean sentiment hinders the improvement of inter-Korean ties, and President George W. Bush's proclamation of North Korea as the "axis of evil."

My addition they left out:
And the fact that America is in Korea in the first place.

They don't want troops, but they get angry when we decide to pull out.

And why add this quote if they couldn't add a Korean editor response???

"Concerning the withdrawal of U.S. troops from Korea, 49.5 percent of U.S. editors said it depends on the situation in the North, Northeast Asia and international affairs, 16 percent that it should be after unification and 13 percent within 5 years. Eleven percent of the editors preferred immediate withdrawal. "

WHAT DID THE KOREAN EDITORS SAY????

What a bunch of chickens!! Get some guts, people!

I laughed, too, at the ironies in the survey: the best is that Korean journalists don't like US because of the death of the 2 Korean schoolgirls (I guess they agree that it's some weird waegook conspiracy to murder 2 kids, eh? and NOT what it seems like to the rest of the world -- i.e., a traffic accident because 2 kids were paying no attention to the LOUD, NOISY ARMY TANK BEHIND THEM) AND because US is now reducing troops (Uh, Koreans: isn't that what you wanted BECAUSE of the death of the 2 schoolgirls?).

Ah, Korea! Land that sometimes Makes No Sense to us waegooks.
