I got a new cell phone. It's a Samsung AnyCall 3G, specially designed for foreignors.
Although the first 216 pages of the manual are in Korean, the 15 remaining pages are in English. That's quite a translation!
You can choose an English or Korean display.
And, you can use it internationally, unless you happen to be in Atlanta, Georia, USA. Don't know why, but that's what it says. |

Hmm...I'm curious to know more about this. Right now I'm in the U.S. and have a pretty basic Samsung flip-phone through Cingular (no camera). But I'll be in Korea for 3.5 months starting on June 8th. Unfortunately I signed a two-year contract with Cingular, and I doubt they'll be so cooperative as to suspend my service and allow me to tack on the 3.5 months later, when I'll actually be able to use my phone...
But anyway...what kind of contract comes with this AnyCall phone you bought? Even though you can use it in the U.S., is it expensive to do so? How much is the phone and the contract, and are there any pre-paid options?
It'd be nice to have a cell phone while I was in Korea... |

You can set up roaming in Korea: not as easy as elsehwere, but possible. You rent a CDMA/GSM phone at the airport (or buy one at two locations in Seoul) bung your (US) SIM card in and Bob's your uncle. |

How much did it cost? How long is the contract? |

I have a phone with a European SIM card...can I get that activated here? If so, where/how? |

The Motorola I bought 3 years ago did all that. As does the Samsung I bought last year.
English menu and roaming capability are common now. |

Yep, you need to contact KTF or SK at the airport (or dowtown office, sorry don't know the address). You either rent a CDMA/GSM phone or buy one. I bought one, about 200,000 I think: don't get excited, they are really crummy phones. But, they work. |

Judging by last time I tried it and experienced dropped/missed calls about 75% of the time, I think 'work' is stretching it somewhat. They seem to be ok for outgoing calls, but they suck at incoming.
Maybe better if you buy the thing?
I hope one of the WCDMA operators signs a roaming agreement soon (oh, and launches commercially). It's wonderful going back to Japan and being connected again. |

Maybe, at least I have not had the problems you had. I don'y use it outgoing (Korean one's for that) but incoming have been OK.
I should add that my UK operator is O2 and Korean partner KTF.[/quote] |

I have the above phone as well....got it about a year ago, well maybe it is a model older...
Got me a friend at KTF and got it for 300 000 won with 150 free text messages and I ring like crazy and it only costs me 35 000 won a month max...
Awesome little phone.... |
