Hi

I am looking for a little information about living in Seoul. I am seeking a job in Korea. One job in particular has caught my interest. The problem is, that the salary is 2.2 million won, but housing is not provided. The key money will be provided up to 10 million won but the rent is all on me. So my question is, would this be enough to live comfortably, pay rent (in Kangnam), and still save a little bit of money. Having never lived in Korea, I really have no idea if this is feasible. I know this is not the highest paying job in Korea, but it does seem like a good, reliable one working with adults (which is what I am seeking). And to be honest, if I can still survive and save just a bit of money, the other qualities are more important to me than the pay.

Any insight into this would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Sepending on the area of Seoul (and even the are of Gangnam) that you choose to live in, 10 million in key money should get you a decent, modern officetel (one room apartment with seperate bathroom) with a monthly rent of between 300,000 and 400,000 won.

Alternatively you can find something a little bigger (small one or two bedroom apartments) in older buildings for about the same price range.

Then you can go cheaper by looking for a rooftop apartment or a basement apartment.

Ok, so let's say I find an apt. for 300.000 to 500,000 (and I really don't need much, I am happy with a small place). Is this really a reasonable rent to expect and.... if so, can a person survive and save a bit on 1.7 -1.9 million while living in Seoul?

You teaching adults for Pagoda or Direct English or someone like that?

Would you be doing a split shift? Those aren't fun, in my opinion.

YBM- which I can only assume fits in with the rest of those you mentioned.

Yes- split shift, but I think I can deal with that. They say it should change in 3-6 months.

hey dogboy!

i thought as soon as i read your op that this was the new YBM hogwans opening for adults around the country. why dont you teach in daejeon? the living is less expensive, as are the costs of most things compared to seoul. also, i heard the overtime at these schools are available a lot, so your wages could reach up to 3 million, with only a few hours a day more. look at the other cities too. seoul aint all that anyway!

No housing and split shifts? That sucks the big one. Why are you accepting it?
