| Does anyone have any experiance with Seosan? Specifically I was wondering about the nature, pollution, and the people. Thanks. |

I'm not really qualified.. but I did spend ONE Friday night in Seosan. It was incredibly boring.
My friend and I were exploring that area of Korea by car.. and it was a big enough town we thought (compared to whats around it), so we rolled in there for the night.
When we went walking around.. we found the 'nightlife area'.. but its not much of an area. Not much of a town really. I'm not sure, but I don't think the town has a university or much of anything there, so its kind of a backwater spot feel to it.
On the plus side, during the Summertime, you could get to Mollipo Beach (which was actually quite a decent beach compared to most Korean beaches). Nothing spectacular, but for Korea, not bad. Its still about 50km though, so its not you'd be spending much if any time at the beach either though. Outside of the few months of Summer, even that beach wouldn't have anything to offer. So then you'd really be suffering the rest of the year.
Regarding nature.. I think the nature of Korea is much more interesting on the other side of Korea.. Gangwon-do area.. the part of Korea that Seosan is at is largely flat and more farmish-like than anything.
People. Well-intentioned and very Korean like everywhere else. Not really any different, better or worse, than anywhere else.
Personally, if I were given a list of about 50 cities in Korea to live in.. I'd put Seosan in the bottom 5. |

Spent my first tour there, until fired by a certain hagwon which will remain nameless (rhymes with "tunglish.") Lesson learned, there and elsewhere: Never trust a Canadian hagwon owner.
That probably isn't of much interest to you, though. On to Seosan itself:
The foreign teacher community in town is fairly small, and when I was there relatively close-knit. (Of course that changes as people come and go). Also a fair number of engineers working at the local factories. But if you're looking for big-city life, you won't find it there.
The only uni in Seosan is Hanseo University, which is fairly small and quite a ways out in the country.
There are quite a few nice things to see and do in the area, not so much in the town proper. You shouldn't miss the Baekje Buddhas, nor the birding in migrant season. Haemi Castle is worth a visit too, as is the Gayasan area (temples, mountains, Peace and Quiet). Anmyeondo, in neighboring Taean, is Korean-famous for its piney scenery. Mallipo beach isn't bad either (actually much more pleasant in the off-season, IMO). Taean takes about 20 minutes by bus, although it takes quite a bit longer to get into the hinterland.
Other neighboring towns include Hongseong, which had a thread about itself here a while back, and Dangjin. Cheonan, which is practically part of Seoul these days, isn't far away either.
Not much air pollution.
Bus connections in general are quite decent, thanks to the new expressway. No trains or planes, though.
