| A student wrote, "I must effort." This was one of very few errors in her essay, and she obviously understand that effort is work. My dilemma is that it would be easy to change it to, "I must work hard" but I prefer to stick to a student's original vocabulary. But how do I do that here without producing some monstrosity like, "I must put in a lot of effort?" |

Tell her she needs a verb to go with her modal "must".
'I must make an effort' or 'I must put forth the effort' are suitable. |

put forth effort? What is that? Never heard of it.
To the OP, I had exactly the same thing today in a letter I marked. I bet Korean has effort hada going on so they think that effort is a verb. Anyway, I'd simply tell the student to go and check effort in a good English-English dictionary and make the correction themselves. |

| 'Effort' is a noun. Every sentence needs a verb. 'You must make an effort', 'it takes effort', etc. |
