i'm currently not doing any privates but i'm curious whether anyone has actually got permission from immigration to do them and what it entailed. my husband and i were just shooting the shit tonight about doing joint private lessons, but i don't want to get my hopes up about it if there's no chance in hell we'd get permission.

thanks.

agreed.

Do them if you'd like, but know that it won't be legal. Beside, how would they write it on the back of your card?

The Education Department allows the holder of an F2 to teach privately at his or her home upon your registration as a teacher at your local office. Immigration know this but also have been known to be inconsistent in applying E2 coverage.

Go to your local Education office and ask to register, it's simple- one form. Then phone Imm. and ask them for E2 cover. You'll have to provide the teaching location, amount of students, times they'll be taught, the total teaching hours per student per week and what they're paying you. Basically giving them a schedule. You should find, if you get all your ducks in a row, they'll clear it for you.

On the other hand you could believe the two previous posters.

I'll try to find the complete source and post the link.

It is possible but you will have to pay tax on your pvt lesson income.

Keep some receipts or income statements because the taxman will come knocking.

Make sure immigration does things properly for you or you might get a nasty surprise.

Yes, or you could get the Education and Immigration passing the buck to one another like they did when my friend tried to apply ("You can't because of Immigration/ You can't because of the Dept. of Education").

An F-2 does give its holder the right to get any work license that you are qualified for...you only need a highschool diploma to get a tutoring license.

I don't think I've ever heard of such a crock in all
my life. Immigration will probably laugh at you. "Hey guys"
they'll say, "This whitey wants us to legalize his privates. What
an idiot." Do you think the sidewalk tents, food trucks, Korean
private teachers etc. will be following suit and running to their
local tax offices clamouring to pay taxes? Get a serious grip!

I have an F2-1 visa and all I do is teach privates. I have never
been hassled by anyone at anytime. I will never pay taxes!

I AM THE GLORIOUS "PRIVATEER"!

4.2 this month. My buddy is over 5. Teaching for the Mr. Kims
and Lees of this country is strictly a sucker's game. They are all
on the take one way or another anyway. That is how things are done in
this country. Where do you think you are, Soviet Canuckistan!!!!

I would gladly pay the taxes if I could teach privates legally. But I'm only on an E-2, so there's no way for me to do it legally. Is there????

Different,

Maybe not pvts but you could ask your employer permission to teach part-time at another school. That would be legal.
