No real offense intended, but for the life of me I can't figure out why a western north american woman would ever want ever want to spend an extended amount of time in Korea (besides money). For a guy its not so bad, but I feel like like, if I was a western woman, this place would be like going back in time to some bizzaroland that is like 40 years behind the modern world in terms of any progress women have made in the past. Also, a lot of the men, espeically the older generation, make wonton sexual advances without bliking an eyelid, or treat you a sub-human sex object or prosititue upon intial contact, Korean women can be quite childish, whiny, and overly melodramatic by western standards at times, a lot of the foreign guys here are judgemental, shallow mysoginisitc pigs or drunks with no future or employability skills back home, this place is dry stale vacum of unhappy people who spend most slaving away at school and work with no sense of passion or creativity in life, a to of other cultural differences, the overall disreard for the environment, the list goes on and on.....
A few years I came here with my then girlfriend to work at a winter camp in Anseong and the general atttutdes and behavior of the people were driving her insance to the point where she was on the brink of having panic attacks and had to get out after two months...In fact the vast majority of times Ive met a western women Ive met in Korea she only would hang out with other western women...I guess it wouldnt be so bad if you came with boyfriend or something, but why not go someplace like western Europe or Australia where I suspect you would feel much more comfortable and treated as an equal?

Yes, the staring and ogling from the ajeoshis can be annoying, but as a woman I generally feel much safer here walking outside than in Los Angeles, California. I'm actually terrified about going back to California in the next couple of months because I've been accustomed to feeling safe here. It's not all bad for a western women here. And I've met some great western guys here as well as great western girls here too. There's more time for get-togethers here than back home where everyone is too busy. And the ajeomas here have taken care of me. Yes, I made my feelings about Korean ajeoshis perfectly clear on another thread, but I think I can k*ck their a** if needed be. In Southern California, I have to worry more about being raped/ robbed/murdered at gunpoint than in Korea. And I actually was held up at gunpoint when I worked at a California movie theater in college. So I'd rather deal with the idiotic comments by older korean men than dealing with the crazies in Southern California anyday.
Plus, I met my Korean husband here, so it can't be all bad

For the money of course... As far as being accosted by Korean men and treated like some kind of prostitute; I've never experienced that, as a whole Korean men and women seem pretty polite and well behaved. |

Many come for money and adventure, although more heavily on the money side. I'm having a really hard time here, to be quite honest. But I recognize that there is a great deal of personal growth happening in me at the same time. Still, I can understand when you talk about girls having panic attacks. I've never had one, but I have been really emotional at times here. In my home country I'm far from level-headed, but in Korea I sometimes feel like a bomb waiting to go off. I feel quite safe here, walking around the streets, going anywhere at nighttime, but emotionally I can be a nighttime sometimes. Yes, it would be easier to be here with your boyfriend, but I guess in that case I wouldnt be growing so much as an individual.
To answer your question... I dont know why any western woman would come here, except for the money and if she didn't know what she was getting into. I knew but underestimated the difficulty of actually working here. |

I tend to try not and let the negative aspects of living here drive me insane. Part of what I love about korea is that there's always something weird happening.
Weird can be good and bad. But it sure as hell makes life interesting here. |

Maybe some come for the adventure, but nobody stays for the adventure - we stay for the money. Interesting - yes; Adventure - no. In spite of the pitfalls, this really is a place of comfort and convenience. Any "Marco Polo ain't got shit on me" talk from foreign residents here is just laughable. |

Perhaps it's unusual, but I get harassed far more often on public transit than in cabs. |

I think the better question is why would they stay, if and when they realize it is a crapshoot of a violent, sexist culture.
An American girl I know who is having a reasonably good time, most of the time, has had her fair share of nonsense. Most recently a taxi driver began taking her to a deserted area of Seoul while blowing her kisses and saying "I love you teacher". She jumped out of a (granted, slowly) moving taxi and ran. She also had a woman enter her apartment and wave a knife in her face (her AD said "were you playing music too loud?"). And she was pushed into a wall by a Korean man cause he thought she shouldn't be smoking.
This weekend I am getting her some pepper spray (will call it AjosiAway) and will encourage her to use it liberally combined with hysterical shrieking when feeling threatened. |

might be more effective to teach her to swear like a sailor in Korean. Pepper spray can blow back at the sprayer- and that's not fun. |

I never got harrassed, never assaulted and often went bar-hopping and rode cabs alone. |
