Korea to support stem cell research
The Ministry of Science and Technology said yesterday it plans to form a taskforce within the state-run Korea Science and Engineering Foundation to support international collaboration and manage intellectual property rights on stem cell research. Yesterday's announcement came after a meeting between policymakers and scientists, including Hwang, Vice Minister of Science and Technology Choi Seok-sik and chief presidential advisor for science and technology Park Ky-young. "The government's decision to support international research efforts comes at an important time with stem cell research gathering enormous attention around the world. Scientists from the United States and Britain are suggesting us to jointly form an international workshop on stem cell research," said Hwang, who said he is considering making an international "stem cell bank" to center the global research efforts. Currently, Korea, Britain, China and Singapore are the only countries that allow government funding for stem cell research.
