You'd have to get a North Korean visa first, and that's impossible. North Korea won't issue a visa to American citizens.
The tour package has them drive by bus via a new road from Goseong to the MDL, where it links up with the North Korean road to the mountain. |

| Sorry, as an American, the best you can do is get a package tour to the DMZ...you can't even visit the DMZ by yourself....not that I know of. |

| One of my students went there and they were told not to wear any clothing with English on it. If you can't even wear a "Lick my juicy" tshirt, one wonders what chances a real, live American would have... |

I know of an Australian who recently did that.. she said it was a garbage trip.. not worth it.
They just tried to sell her stuff the entire time and over charge her for dinners and such.. just some money-making scheme from the N.K government. |

Americans are allowed to go to Geumgang, provided they're not military.
Someone I know went a little while ago, but left her military ID at home (she's married to a servicemember). The Norks didn't catch the SOFA stamp in her passport either, ha ha I guess they don't watch AFN.
FYI only South Korea stamps your passport and not the Norks. |

There's no problems with Americans going to Mt Geumgang because it's completely contained from the rest of the country - no need for a visa or anything. We were looking at organizing a trip, but decided against it for a number of reasons.
I've heard it's not worth the cash - this is the high season, as well. It's much cheaper in cooler months. Also, the people who work there aren't even North Koreans. They bring in workers from China, so that they avoid "tainting" real North Koreans. |

| Why in the hell would anyone want to go to Mt. Geumgang. I mean, really. That's like someone saying to you, "Hey, we're here in Indonesia can you take this 8 pound package through customs for me". |

As far as I remember from the accounts of those who have been to NK is that anyone can go there. Provided they are given a visa!!!!
They hire English teachers now and then but I think preference is given to non-north-Americans.
Really though. It's not that hard. They appreciate tourists because they absolutely rob whoever goes there with visa fees and hotel costs. Not scientific, but I heard NK is one of the most expensive vacations in the world. |
