I'm going to meet the gf's parents for the first time this weekend. Yes, she is Korean. What kind of gift should I get for them? She has no idea, either. |

If they are not fundamentalist Christians, expensive whiskey or scotch will do just fine. For her mother a nice new set of PJ's or some kind of hard to find/expensive candy. Anything ginseng is good as well. Are they farmers? That would be good to know. |

Is the father a drinker? If so, take him a nice bottle of whiskey.. and some make-up for the mother. |

No, they're not farmers. Although I would be interested in knowing you suggestions were they farmers.
Thanks to the others (and you ) for your suggestions. |

oh I forgot. Make sure that the gift comes in a department store bag and is nicely wrapped/presented.
The presentation of the gift is almost as important as the gift itself. |

i just met the parents for the second time. this, incidentally, was the 'asking for the daughter's hand in marriage' meeting. we were running late in getting to her house, so we popped into a liquor store and picked up a bottle of scotch. i was a little wary of it, because the old man had just gotten out of the hospital from stomach surgery, and wasn't supposed to drink. but she said it was okay, because he liked to display the bottles.
in the end the bottle and i were recieved with open arms, and we're set to marry in november.
good luck. |

Congratulations!
I have my first meeting on Sunday, and have been told to expect very little in the way of friendly overtures. Her folks have never met a westerner before, and I'm anticipated to be stealing their eldest daughter from them.
I'm bringing some of the rarest, most expensive green tea available.
But thanks for the tip, clg: I'll be sure to wrap it nicely. |

There is a great thread on this subject exactly from 2004 if you don't mind using the search function. |
