A jury in January convicted Woodland resident Robert Ferguson of two counts of petty theft for stealing the cheese and snatching a woman's wallet off a 7-Eleven counter.

He also had two prior convictions.

8 years isn't too unreasonable under the circumstances.

The man should receive treatment for his bipolar disorder. He only commits thefts during manic episodes.

The American judicial system and many people working in it are so damn vindictive and inhumane. And he got 7 years 8 months only after dropping the bid to give him life Exclamation

Crime is at a 40-year low, and incarceration at an all-time high. America incarcerates its citizens at the highest rate in the world, and blacks at a rate higher than in apartheid South Africa. The relentless march towards the police state continues.

I reckon this is what is at a 40 year high:

Quote:
More than a hundred retired New York Police Department captains and higher-ranking officers said in a survey that the intense pressure to produce annual crime reductions led some supervisors and precinct commanders to manipulate crime statistics, according to two criminologists studying the department.

Anyways, 8 years is pretty crazy.

I agree with the principle behind this. In cases where non-violent offenders are committing crimes based on medical disorders, treating the disorder is by far preferential to incaracerating them, assuming it is effective at stopping the crimes. It's more humane and cheaper. We need to stop viewing the justice system as the "punishment system." What matters is results.

Nah, they should give him the drugs while he's serving the 8 year sentence. Then he'll be like "Wow, this is where the hell I am?" He'll probably resolve his issues more clearly then and won't need the drugs!

If he hadn't of committed is earlier 2 offenses, then he wouldn't have gotten 8 years.

67k/yr (cost of prison for one male in California) for 8 years over a brick of cheese. Aren't you a fiscal conservative pkang?

Who cares about the bag of cheese? He also snatched a woman's wallet. With two priors, is 8 years a bit much? Yes, its a bit much. Maybe it should be 4-5 tops.

But stealing someone's wallet can really frak them.
