I got a new (for me) computer yesterday. It's a nice machine, but when I scroll with the wheel, it pages down and up in kind of a melting type motion. I don't like this, I just want it to go up and down. How can I fix this?

First, what kind of mouse is it and do you have the drivers installed? If it's a generic 3-button mouse, you probably don't need any. If, however, it's a fancy 5-button plus wheel jobbie, then you may need to do this. It never hurts to have the correct software for the hardware....even in the simplist cases, it will make the difference between erratic and logical behavior.

Then go to the control panel and check out "mouse". Look at the options after double-clicking the icon.....maybe "smooth mouse scrolling" is enabled or disabled....play with it. Also, check the other scrolling options....how many lines, etc... .

Hope it helps.

Thanks for the reply Demophobe. It's a simple 3 button Logitech USB mouse. I tried yesterday with the control panel thing, but on the wheel option there weren't many things there. I will look at it again when I go home tonight.

I too recently bought a logitech 5-button one....it was strange without drivers, let me tell you.

Here is the download page for the drivers. Download the one for your mouse and go from there.

Heck, even the simplest 3-buttlon mouse has drivers from there! Kind of surprised, but hey....logitech are a rival of MS, eh? Nuff said....

Yea, I downloaded the correct driver. It's just something strange with my screen, I guess I gotta get used to it. Even when I drag the bar on the right side of the screen it does it. I'm used to the screen just going up and down, but it's doing the melting, refreshing thing every time. I don't even know how to describe it, it's like a wave.

I think I know what you mean....you can see the picture being re-drawn from the bottom up (or top down)...you can warch it move along and the "refreshed" page appearing after the wave....but one can see the division move along.

Honestly, this happened on machines that were struggling with too little system resources. How much RAM do you have? What is running in the background? Look down at the system tray...lots of icons? When you CTRL+ALT+DEL once, what can you see? A massive list, big list or moderate list?

Video drivers are up-to-date? Monitor drivers? Yes, they too have drivers that control refresh rates, resolutions, color, etc...

Also look into the services running. Viper's lair has a good little tutorial on this. "Google" the running tasks after you CTRL+ALT+DEL and find out about whats running...perhaps you have too few resources for all that wants to eat them up.

Try running MemTurbo 3.0 on your system. It will free your memory of idle processes and tune your CPU. For low resource systems, this is a decent, temporary, solution if you don't have the money to upgrade your hardware.

Yeah, memturbo can do wonders, but it isn't without its drawbacks.

It really does sound like your system is suffering a bit...perhaps you could fill us in on the specs? RAM and video card in particular, but also whats running in the background.

Well, my computer is running Windows XP. It has a 2.4 Ghz celeron chip. It only has 224 MB of RAM, maybe this is the problem. The video card, I couldn't really find and information about this. And, when I hit ctrl+alt+del, there was a total of 28 processes running.

Yes sir! You need more RAM. Even memturbo won't help for long. It will clean out the RAM, so to speak, but it will quickly fill up again.

Before rushing out to buy some RAM (and it is fairly cheap), be sure to power down and remove the RAM that's in there. You need to ge t a set....not mix and match. RAM is easy to remove....2 hinge clips...one at the top and one at the bottom. Move the clips away from the RAM slot (up and down) and the RAM will lift out easily.

Check the info on the stick and jot it down or take it with you to the computer store.

WinXP really doesn't come into it's own until 512MB or even 1GB is installed. You will notice a HUGE difference with either choice.

Sweet action, I'll head to Yongsan this weekend. My computer was free so I don't mind spending 50-100k won for some RAM if it will greatly improve my computer. Thanks Demophobe and others

Well, I got a boost in RAM, I added 512 MB, but I still have the same problem with the scrolling. So, I went to install the monitor driver, and it said my video card driver needed to be installed again. I can't find any information about my video card. How do I find out what kind of video card I have? After I install this and my monitor driver I think the problem will be solved.

Wow. Ok...Um....well, you can go to the control panel, system, device manager, display adapter.

You can open the box with a flashlight and try to see.

You can download Sisoft Sandra, the free "lite" version, and use the video module to tell you all about it. just double click the module that has a heading that matches what hardware you want to know about. A great proggie for telling you lots about whats in your machine.

Or.....You can simply right click on the desktop and select "properties", then "advanced". It should say "plug and play monitor on xxxxxxxxx" in which "X" will be your display adapter.

Could be ATI, Nvidia or Intel "onboard" graphics....hope it's not the latter.

There was a link a while ago for a proggie that will identify your video card, but I can't recall what it was. Sisoft will do the job though.

Be sure to check the "add/remove programs" in the control panel before updating drivers. If the graphics driver is listed there, remove them and reboot. Upon reboot, Windows will prompt you for the files or it will attempt to serch for them...I think it gives you a choice. Cancel this operation, find the downloaded drivers and double-click them. They usually have an installer that needs no help for Windows.

Yep, I made a big mistake when I did the right click - properties procedure. I clicked something and now I have nothing, black screen. I rebooted and I get the Windows XP startup screen then nothing. So, I plugged in the old computer again for now.
