I'm assuming that this is bad. Periodically my computer will let out a single short beep and at the same time the mouse will either jump or stop working for 1-5 seconds.

I have no clue as to what this means or even what I should google...

any ideas?

Well, my experience has been that this is usually caused due to a problem between the keyboard and the chair. Seriously. When people complain about this, it's usually because the keyboard is bumping up against something and one of the keys is pressed down accidentally.

One possibility is that the keyboard has gone bad in some way. If you have an extra one lying around, you might try swapping them and seeing if things get better. Recently, one of my coworkers ran into a similar problem after a wireless keyboard had started acting up. He swapped that keyboard with one of those excellent old-fashioned kind and an hour later, the customer called to complain again. Turns out that the wireless was a on a battery and tucked away in a nearby drawer, still talking to the computer and causing trouble.

Now, this could be some other problem, of course, but I'd start by looking at the keyboard.

It's not the keyboard. It's plugged in via USB and has no way to bump the keys - I use the sliding drawer under the desk to hold the keyboard.

One of my friends suggested it was a faulty mouse and found something on google to back that up. I'll be checking into that later today.

Maybe it's your computer's way of saying you should just give up? Laughing
