What do you think the chances are, realistically, of an invasion by Nkorea in the near future?

A statistically improbable amount of (unrelated) suggestions / comments lately made by students, friends etc on this topic have led me to ponder this question.

Allegedly the highest number of US warships since, well, the Korean war are floating around in the seas near korea.

Recently a "high ranking" foreigner here in seoul advised all expats to register at their embassies.

Would an invasion be a "pre-preemptive" strike?

Will this be the end of us all?

Whaddya think ?

I registered and get tons of text messages like "Embassy advises pale folks to leave this wretched peninsula. Riots and demonstrations are in the offing." Gee thanks...tell me something I don't know.

On a related note, why do Koreans and expats insist on text messaging instead of the human contact afforded by a phone call? This one really annoys me. Does anyone know the answer? If so, PM me.

Yes I registered at my embassy, it kept my mom happy. But then my resgistration "ran out" (they contacted me to ask if I was still here and I didn't reply so I got a note that they assumed I had left).

I send text messges because my phone service is crappy and one 2 minute phone call ends up sucking 2-3,000 won of credit, where as the one senence of information needed to relay ("Bus stuck in traffic, be there 30mins late" etc) costs me only about 100 won.

Have never registered in all this time. And text messages make me so angry and frustrated I've been known to grit my teeth to keep from screaming... you won't catch me sending those things!

I did but it had nothing to do with North Korea. It was mostly just in case, or rather when, an election is called. Damn minority govts.

Actually, I don't think the embassy has much to do with that. Why did I register?
