Have you ever been there? What's it like? It it worth a visit? I want to get away and get near some water, and I'd like to get far away from Seoul, but not leave the country. Mokpo sounds interesting.

advise?

I have been to Mokpo only once, but would recommend it. It has a beautiful view of the sea. If you go there go to the mountain there (Yudal mountain I think). It has a wonderful view of the city and the sea and islands that surround the city. I think it took maybe an 1 hour to hike to the top. If you are staying overnight then the best place to stay is near Lotte mart although I dont know the name of the area. There are motels there for 25,000 a night and they are all realatively new. It is also one block from the water. If you are looking to meet and mingle with foreigners there I was told that most foreigners there go to Wa Bar. Hope this helps.

Thanks banillaq,

One more question. Are there any beaches there that are good for swimming?

There's one area where all the museums are. One museum has an ancient ship. Mokpo was a port for the trade between Korea and China. Korea had fine ceramics to ship over.

There's another museum which is a natural history musuem. Funky in an eighties sort of way, and ajunct to it is a coin collection. The natural history museum has freaky, stuffed fish, seashells, and coral. One fish looks like a bat or devil; freaky!

There's a mountain right in town and, hiking up that, the city splayed below and beyond, sea and little islands around. At the base of the mountain is an orchid greenhouse museum. And a buddhist temple.

It's an old city, with narrow streets, and a funky old traditional atmospere. I liked it lot and went there often, when I lived in Kwangju which was an hour north. South of Mokpo Chindo isn't far away. There's an old fort to fend off Japanese invasion half a millenia ago. And Chindo dogs all over the place, since that's where they're from.

You can get to Chindo by bridge.
