Advanced Micro Devices was second in coming to market with a dual-core desktop chip, but it's first in benchmark scores, according to sites that test the chip.
Both Anandtech and Tom's Hardware--two hardware benchmarking sites--have published reports stating that, in their own tests, the dual-core Athlon 64 X2 chips generally edge out the Intel Pentium D and the dual-core Pentium 4 Extreme Edition, although the results vary by the tests.
Anandtech found that the fastest dual-core Athlon, the 4800+, and often other dual-core Athlons, typically outperformed the Intel chips on tests for single applications, such as running Adobe Photoshop or DivX.
In multitasking tests, however, the Intel chips often edged out the equivalent AMD processors. In these tests, AMD chips outscored Intel on multitasking trials that involved games, but Intel had an advantage in tests involving Web surfing or burning DVDs.
The tester at Tom's Hardware, meanwhile, came to similar conclusions, but generally gave slightly higher marks to the AMD chip, noting that the dual-core Athlon also consumes less energy.

This whole 64bit thing has me thinking....
When is a good time to go out and buy a fully 64bit system. I'm an average user so I don't need cutting egde. I want to buy when the prices are dropping.
This year? Next year? |

I guess that depends on what you have now. I've got a 2.4mhz pentium 4 chip, and don't really need anything new for a while. Maybe in a year or two I'll get something different. I'm still curious about the heat issues of these chips.
As for 64 bit... I wonder if we'll need that in the next 3 years at all. |

I have a P4 2.4 too. It seems to handle all I want it to do. I was just wondering if a 64bit system is very noticably faster.
My DVD burning software can take a long time to do things like 'Transcoding' (don't even know what that is!!!), and converting AVI to MPEG takes about 24 hours for one movie! I actually haven't even bothered to wait for that to complete yet. |

I think it's safe to say that nayone upgrading after the next 6 months will be moving to 64-bit. The whole industry will move there soon enough.
It will be faster when the software becomes available.
Dual-core? Well, that will be a tougher sell than 64-bit. I won't be going there on my next upgrade....in all honesty, probably not for a couple of years. Again. the software is playing catch-up with all of this new tech...it will take a while. |

The longer you wait, the cheaper it'll be. For example, AMD will be doing a price cut on its desktop chips in July. nVidia will be releasing the G70 graphics chip soonish, and ATi will be releasing the 520; as soon as they do that, it'll put downward pressure on existing graphic card prices.
In general, if you're able to wait, wait. The prices will go down.

Wait until they make x64 drivers for everything. My sound card and camera are still unsupported. 32 bit applications don't "feel" any different with a 64 bit processor. The idea is to be ahead of the game so that when they start making 64 bit applications, you're ready. |

And this will be the problem for a long time. In order to truly benefit, an application should run exclusively in 64-bit, with no backwards compatability. However, as long as they cater to both markets (at least in the smattering of 64-bit software that's out there that is backwards compatable and has been benched against 32-bit mode), the 64-bit is the same or even slower than it's 64-bit counterpart.
UT2004, Far Cry and I think Halo 2 have 64-bit variations that show no benefit whatsoever over the 32-bit versions.
Games are a good guage for this as well...I am not being narrowly game-minded about this. Games work a CPU very hard....as hard or harder than most applications.
Some good details here using Shadow Ops game.
Far Cry 64 is here.
Anandtech has some benches.
Ars Technica has a good 64-bit writeup, but it's quite technical.
Wait until Longhorn...they all follow MS. |

I hear it won't matter as much for gaming, but I will LOVE the multitasking capability of the new dual-core chips. I just wonder how hot and loud they're gonna be. |

It's all about the coding man. It will matter as much for games as any other application. Having a game written for a dual-core, 64-bit CPU will really be incredible. We might actually get AI that has some AI.
And yes...the multi-tasking will be amazing. |
