The United States has critisized Canada because many South Koreans have illegally entered The United States through Canada.

So who is more to blame? Is Canada to blame for giving Koreans access to Canada without a visa? Or is the United States to blame for being the ones who don't secure their own borders well enough?

just curious as to how people feel about this. This is not a left-right/Canada vs. the U.S. thread. Just wanted to get a sense of what people think about the new news out today.

I wish there were more Koreans in the US and less in Korea. Would make both countries better.

As for the question both are at fault.

I agree with Joo on this one. Human trafficking is one of the true horrors of the modern world. IMO no one is doing enough to control it. A few weeks ago I posted an article about 300 boys being missing in England. A lot of this trafficking involves the sexual slavery of children. I can't think of many things worse. Last night there was a short TV thing about 5 year old prostitutes in Cambodia.

There is talk of putting the Army on the Mexican border to control illegal immigration from there. I can see no reason not to put the military on both our borders to better control who (and what) comes in and goes out.

If they entered Canada legally... then Canada is at fault for letting them go to the US illegally?

(don't Koreans get the same deal in Canada as Canadians do in Korea? nothing illegal about entering the country and just 'hanging out' a while)

Hey, go ahead, we don't care. Those American buggers deserve all the scum. Very Happy

Interestingly, the Patriot Act makes specific provision for the "Northern Border" with no equivalent for the souther land border.

So, the machinery is already in place but, presumably by government choice, unused.

Just voted. The latter. Neither of the alternatives are ... very attractive.

How about if the U.S. were to urge Canada to be more selective about the Koreans it lets in? Not follow them around 24/7 once they're in Canada to make sure they don't make the leap, but ... no, I suspect that approach wouldn't work.

The U.S. looks like a big house with a leaky roof and serious flooding in the basement. You can bail (bale?) out the water from the inside until your arms fall (tracking, profiling, arresting & deporting people), which is messy, unpleasant, often ugly, gets everyone in a lather, and the overall PR effect is probably negative -- you annoy more law-abiding people than you discourage illegals. Maybe that's a cost worth paying.

But in any event, bailing (ugh... baling?) it doesn't seem to be very effective, does it? No way around it, I think: you've just got to get up on that roof and patch up the holes. Problem is, that roof is huge and Canada, by just being Canada and where it is, doesn't make that job any easier. Still though, perhaps Canada could lend a little assistance from it's side, no? I mean, today it's Koreans jumping the border. If the Chinese were to get in on the game... what then?

But it's not the same "bail/bale", I know.

Well, I suppose that could solve the Canadian unemployment problem:
Have all unemployed Canadians lined up along the Canada-US border, checking for illegal Koreans. Laughing

This is just another lame attempt by members of the US government to try and blame someone else for their own failings.

The sad part is that there probably a lot of folks on both sides of the border dumb enough to believe that this is somehow Canada's fault. Embarassed

I agree. Koreans can't expect the U.S. visa situation to change anytime soon as long as their people-smuggling racket keeps making the news.
