				| More Women Keep Secret Stash of Money There were many responses, but about a third said the money was for themselves, such as when they suddenly need to travel. "The knowledge that I have money I can use for myself at any time gives me freedom," was a typical response. Roughly a quarter said they were saving the money for emergencies, such as accidents or illnesses, while a smaller number said they were saving money for their parents and siblings or to supplement their children's private education. Two or three admitted they were saving in preparation for a divorce.

Office worker Kim Yun-mi, 30, who met her husband of three months through a matchmaker, said, "There are a lot of divorces nowadays, so you never know. I put aside some of my salary every month just in case."

The money comes from various sources. Among housewives, about half said they secretly take it out of their allowance, and about a fifth said they kept money they had saved before getting married. A quarter of housewives said they occasionally do part-time work.

Wives Found Far Richer than their Spouses
A survey indicated married Korean women manage an average of W14.4 million (about US$12,000) of "secret funds" without the knowledge of their spouses, who in turn had only W3.4 million (about US$3,000) kept aside -- or a mere quarter of how much their wives have tucked aside. Duo announced the average of these personal funds was W3.4 million for men and W14.4 million for women.

Park Mi-jin (not her real name) is 43 and seeing a younger man despite being married for 15 years. "In the past, when I told my friends I had a lover, they used to say I was crazy, but now they say I'm clever."
Chun Kyoung-hee of DeRyook International Law Firm says, "Fewer people now think of marriage as an eternal promise, so infidelity and divorce are rising rapidly." As women grow more active in society and their economic power increases, their thinking about marriage and affection has grown freer, she said.
For a thesis on extramarital relationships, Sungkyunkwan University student Yang Da-jin interviewed 196 women in the Seoul-Gyeonggi Province area. Of the respondents, 26 percent said they had had an extramarital affair, she says. The women were frank and unconcerned writing down their experiences on the questionnaire."
