North Korea is world's 29th largest missile exporter
North Korea ranked 29th among major conventional weapons exporters, remaining in the black in its foreign arms trade, a prominent European think tank said Tuesday. The North exported US$96 million worth of conventional weapons to Russia and the Middle East between 2000 and 2004, the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (SIPRI) said.
However, the North was the 86th-largest importer of arms, with imports worth $53 million, the institute said in the "SIPRI Yearbook 2005" on armaments, disarmament and international security.
North Korea sold 3,250 AT-4 antitank missiles and 1,250 SA-16 portable surface-to-air missiles to Russia from 1992 to 2004, the report said.
The North also exported 150 Scud-C missiles to Syria between 1991 and 1996, five Scud missiles to Libya in 1999 and 45 such missiles to Yemen between 2001 and 2002, it said. Two Rodong I missiles were exported to Pakistan between 1996 and 1997, the report added.
South Korea was seventh and 19th in the world ranking of major weapons importers and exporters, with $2.8 billion and $313 million, respectively.
