I'm heading up to Yongsan to buy a digital camera on Friday. Most likely the Canon Ixus 40.
I've checked out Danawa and Omi for prices. If you click on the messy link below you can see that prices for this camera range from 360,000 to 426,000.
http://dica.danawa.co.kr/dicadanawa_new/dica_search_new.html?viewpage=direct_view&product_view=SALE&kindc=CAA&typec=DIGITAL&codec=LCANONIXUS40LG&dica=dica

My questions are:
I guess they are selling the same product, right? Is there a difference in the warranties or where they are produced or something?
Do you think I can get it for 360 at Yongsan or will they want a higher price?
Is Technomart better for digicam shopping?
Can anybody recommend a store in either place?
What's better 2x512MB or 1x1GB (SD storage)?

Thanks for any info and tips.
IS

PS. I'm going to be buying some accessories, so I imagine they should give me a decent discount for buying everything from one place.

Yeah, it's about warranty.

Some of the Canon cameras, for example, are the same camera but have IXUS instead of IXY. One of the two is the Japan model. The other is the Korea model. You don't get a warranty with the Japan model. The same camera can be nearly 1/4 less if you buy the Japan model. It explains this in Korean on Enuri. My gf and I were pondering the same decision last night.

Thanks for the reply Derrek.

However, all the cameras at the link above are Ixus 40, the Korean model. (At least I think they are.)

At this link below, all the cameras are exactly the same except they are the Japanese model Ixy 50. They are priced much lower at 285,000 compared with the Ixus 40 price of 360,000.

So, I'm still not sure why there is such a big difference for the Ixus 40.

Thanks again,

Go for the Japanese models. Who needs to spend an extra 100000 to 200000 won for a Korean model? I got a Canon IXY 600 online from a store in Yongsan, and I must have saved 30% off the Korean model.

The difference in price between the two can't be explained by the warranty. In theory, the Japanese model could be covered by its original warranty if you were to have it repaired in Japan. So, then what gives?

Well, the Korean models are more expensive because Korean corporations are simply making a killing off the fact Korean consumers believe imported goods must be expensive because of Korea's mythically high duty (only 8% on imported cars (lower than in the EU!)).

The IXY 600 sells for about 41 000yen in Japan (trust me, I checked). Add 10% duty (I checked with Customs) to the Japanese wholesale price and it still doesn't add up to 599000 won (the price I found at a major Korean "discount" department store). Like I was saying, they are making a killing.

It's probably mislabeled on the website, or you'd get the other one when you buy it. They're the exact same camera. Just without warranty if you buy the Japan one. Was looking at buying my gf the IXUS/IXY 55 model. That one is newer and cheaper, if memory serves... must be an update on the IXUS/IXY 50. Look for it on Enuri.

Am also looking through the SONY models. Tis a hard decision.

I went with a Japanese model Canon A70 2 years ago in Technomart and the LCD screen went white after a few months and it doesn't focus well. Got burned on that one, so I'd rather have a warranty that doesn't require me to go to Japan to have it fixed for free. Evil or Very Mad

Again, I think all those prices for the Ixus 40 are for the Korean model, because the same camera, the Ixy 50 from Japan, has a much lower price than 360 at 285. It just doesn't add up.

I guess my main question is whether the boys at Yongsan are going to come down to 360 for the Ixus 40.

You can have them repaird without the warranty. Had my camcorder repaired here, without a Korean warranty. Cost me only 14,000won...and it took only two days, despite the fact they had to order the part.

Try that with an Ipod.

My gf's died after the warranty was out, and the service center quoted a price higher than a new one to fix the old!

Cute Apple strategy.

After a trip to Yongsan yesterday, just for looking, I decided to buy my gf the Casio Exilim EX-50 or the 55 with a 2.5" LCD. 310,000 and 340,000 with warranty, respectively. Excellent reviews all-around, and they come with a docking cradle. Those models met all of my desires: 5 megapixel, nice picture, large LCD, docking cradle, viewfinder, sturdy construction, excellent battery life.

I was very impressed with those models.
