As a child, my friend Sean was forbidden to watch "soccer" (as we call it in the Hinterlands) because as his great big Irish-Canadian cop of a father said:

There's no crying in sports.

WOW! That's an almost perfect description of my old man (everything except the cop part).

An Italian kid next door to us named Glen played soccer. Whenever my dad would see him leaving for a game wearing his uniform my dad would say "Oh, there goes Glendila off to his ballet practice."

I've realized that one of the reasons for my prejudice is because when i was a kid, the parents who enrolled their children in soccer were always the yuppie, suburbanite parents who didn't want their kids getting hurt but still wanted them to "get outside for exercise".

Even in high school, those who weren't tough enough to play hockey, rugby and/or football(American) played soccer. Usually the school soccer team was composed of band geeks and Italian mommas boys.

I can understand how this differs in other countries though, and how at an amateur level, there is serious hardnosed play involved.

I'm not that into any sports to be honest but footie is one of the best. A good game of football or rugby are probably the best spectator sports, lots of passion, almost non stop action and heroic efforts. American sports are pretty dull.

American football seems a waste of time, Baseball makes cricket look like the most exciting sport in the world, Nascar is truly boring whilst F1 is only a little bit boring but worth watching. Never quite understood the whole ice hockey thing, whilst we have crappy weather in the UK I would hate to live in Canada and be surrounded by glaciers and polar bears.

Too many stoppages and an obsession with stats make many American sports, dull.

I quite like playing basketball but it is pretty boring to watch, I think that basketball could be improved by more players and a much, much bigger court.

Yeah right. Look at rugby or soccer /"football" and you'll never see anyone taking a hit like they would if LT or John Lynch or Warren Sapp was playing anyone of those games. There is no comparable physical contact of any sport as there is to that of the NFL. I've seen numerous games of Rugby and "Soccer", but they don't compare to watching a rookie receiver getting blind-sided by Bill Romanowski, or a passer getting sacked by Jevon Kearse.

I was drunk...I knew it was JEVON

this has to be one of the funniest posts i've ever read. soccer is "non-stop action" and north american sports are dull? methinks you need to rethink your logic there, bud. hockey is the fastest game on earth, barnone. no game will take you from end to end as quickly as hockey will.
