quite a few ESL jobs here in Vancouver(mostly p/t) but the schools will only accept a TESL Canada approved ESL training program.i have a TEFL Diploma from a U.K. university and 10 years experience in Kr and this 1 school wouldnt offer me an interview because of my qualifications.

this is B.S when ur looking for work!

Agreed...Have you considered about private tutoring or starting your own English teaching business?

Wow, that certainly sucks. Good luck anyhow. Is all of Canada like that?

We were in Victoria a couple of years ago. Obviously a much smaller market, but there are a lot of foreigners going there to study Rolling Eyes . But, they wanted a TESL or something similar. Plus, in my case there were no jobs. There were a lot of schools, but they were cutting jobs. My timing wasn't very good tho. Still a little too close to 911, shortly after SARS, and right around the mad cow scare wasn't helping the cause. Now, I'm not sure.

Would UK schools accept anything but the CELTA or a UK-certified program?

Just curious.

I did my TESL at a University in Nova Scotia before I went to Korea. There was a guy who taught in Japan for a few years, married a japanese woman, moved back to Canada and she got a job teaching Japanese but he couldn't find anything 'stable' teaching English. Granted Nova Scotia doesn't have a huge ESL market. He told us that it is very difficult to get something full time teaching English when you get back home...I believe he had just finished his thesis for his masters in TESL.

I have considered internet teaching when we get home - out of desperation. Hopefully, everything will work out and I don't have to go that route, but it is something to consider for those who need work back home and enjoy/don't mind teaching. I haven't heard much about the internet thing and wouldn't be surprised if that would be a great way of getting shafted in pay, especially considering you're getting paid from halfway around the world.

u can get your credentials reviewed by TESL Canada but its a BS paperwork thing.

ESL work here in Vancouver is not career oriented like living and working in Asia.its PT on the side work.

What kind of ESL jobs are you looking for back home? Public school? Private institute? IEP? Community college?
