Hello, everyone! It's the hiring season again for this school,so I'd like to say a few things about working there.
Mostly,I suggest that you consider their offer of employment with caution. The director,HILARY NO, has proven herself to be quite an inconsiderate employer in the past. Here are the examples of her lack of consideration and ethics:
When she fired me,it still remained on my file at the Immigration office, that I'm under contract to her. This should not have happened,as 1 week after firing me,she took me to the Immigration office,so that they could give me an exit order ,standard procedure after employment is terminated---therefore,it should have been written into my file, that I was no loner working for HER!
When applying for a new E-2 visa, my new director then had to call her to confirm that I was free to work for him, which enabled the b*tch to get his phone #. Guess what---A MONTH OR SO AFTER my work at the new hagwon started, she called my new boss on THREE OCCASIONS to complain about my teaching style (if she was really so "concerned" about it,then why didn't she tell him when he called her at the beginning?). She also asked him how much money I was making (as a matter of fact,I was making MORE at my new place)---what business was this of hers, anyways? Also, she started her first conversation with an intriguing comment: " Haven't heard anything from "Babayaga"... ". Why was she expecting to hear from ME?
(I should mention, that I was very unhappy at Ewha ALS,because of the unimaginative and unreasonable academic program (no games or songs, students placed at the wrong levels, too quick a pace for kids to absorb the material, etc.),big, noisy classes and rude, aggressive students. I was considering leaving, but was hesitating because i didn't feel like packing and moving again after only 3 months there. She fired me when I was in the midst of my debating whether I should quit).
As it happened,my new job turned out much more interesting, beneficial, suitable and enjoyable in many ways! The classes were smaller and quieter, I was making more money,I had single accomodations and I was closer to Seoul. My new director was a very friendly,easy-going,generous and accomodating guy. Not to mention more intelligent methods of language-- teaching at my new school. She no doubt got wind of this from my former colleagues to whom I bragged about my highly improved situation, and was scared that they might want to quit ! So, calling my new boss was a way of "paying me back".
I wasn't her only victim. After I left her school, she started using the spare room in the apt to take showers, for noon sleepovers with her hubby and whenever she had an early appt at the school despite emphatic protests from my roommate.
Another employee had a whole day's pay docked for being 1 min. late to class. Yet another was constantly harrassed because he was dating a Korean head teacher who had quit the school. Several Korean teachers left and some foreign teachers were considering leaving and started looking for new schools ,but by then it was getting too late in the contract to quit.
Prospective employees,PLEASE consider this school's offfers of employment with caution!

I'd like to emphasize, that the reason I'm blacklisting this school is NOT vindictiveness for being fired---I was considering leaving the school anyways and ended up in a far more advantageous situation, ----
but rather because I think that people need to know about Hilary's lack of ethics when working with foreigners. Basically, she's a very insensitive woman, who likes to shaft people, treating them like FEUDAL SERFS. GESTAPO in the true sense of the word!
I worked at THREE other schools, and the directors there had a much more gracious, sympathetic and warmer approach to foreigners,so this isn't just a Korean style of doing things. It's her b*tchy personality.
Off course, she may have improved since then(couple of years ago),but I still feel that it's important for people to have all the relevant facts before considering working with her. |
