Workers Heavily Burdened by Employment Insurance
The Board of Audit and Inspection of Korea (BAI) Wednesday announced the result of its inspection into five funds managed by the Ministry of Labor such as the employment insurance fund and the industrial accident insurance fund.
For example, a 72-year-old industrial accident victim succeeded in getting approval for recuperation as many as 58 times from 11 hospitals and six regional branches of Korea Labor Welfare. As a result, he benefited from a total of 270 million won from the government fund for medical costs over the past 10 years. He has also received off-duty wages amounting to 1.78 million won every month.
No matter how much their labor capacity is, once patients get old, offduty wages increase. A 92-year-old patient received as much as 40.8 million won in off-duty wages in the past 34 months since he was diagnosed with pneumoconiosis three years ago.
Another 73-year-old patient is receiving 4.15 million won in offduty wages as the monthly subsidy rises by 29 percent every year.
