Japanese student found dead in apparent suicide
A Japanese woman who came to South Korea to study the Korean language was found dead just outside her school in southern Seoul, police said Friday. A guard of the language institute of Seoul National University found the woman's body late Thursday afternoon on the ground behind the building, they said.

No one said that learning Korean was easy, and now we see some proof.

And you woud've thought it would be so easy for a Japanese person.

(How do you refer to a single Japanese person? You can say American, Australian, Korean, etc. but can you just say a Japanese (irrelevant and insensitive, I know))

When a regular poster here at Dave's says her grandmother died, every single post expressed sympathy. On this thread reporting the death of a Japanese woman, both posters make a joke.

Should I read anything into that?

Yes. It's clear that Plokiju and I did not know the woman. Did you?

Didn't know her personally, but I'd seen her around at SNU... She seemed to have a very outgoing, happy personality... But according to this article she was being treated for depression. Apparently she tried in the morning, but a teacher stopped her, then she jumped anyway in the afternoon... that teacher must be feeling pretty bad.

You can. Just don't try and add an "s" to it when referring to more than one.

This was not a joke. I'm sorry to hear about the woman.

Makes me wonder if it had anything to do with her treatment for being Japanese, and the whole Dokdo thing.

According to the Korean newspaper she was being treated for depression, even before coming here. If we can believe what the newspapers say of course... but apparently nothing to do with being Japanese in Korea.

Gee... this is the first place I'd come if I were depressed and Japanese... NOT!

See, that post may have been kinda funny had you not added the "NOT" at the end.

Unfortunately, as it stands now, the post is retarded and angers me.

I agree wholeheartedly with YaTaBoy's comments re: When a regular poster here at Dave's says her grandmother died, every single post expressed sympathy. On this thread reporting the death of a Japanese woman, both posters make a joke.

I am sorry. I don't usually rant but you guys (those making light of a terrible situation) are just a bunch of insensitive *?$%s. Just because you don't know the person involved doesn't mean that her family, her friends or those who knew and loved her are suffering any less!

I studied with her. She was a wonderfully kindhearted person who was always making sure others were ok. Outgoing, happy and kind. The teacher Pepper girl refers to is my teacher. The first attempt happened during my class. As Peppergirl suggested, the teachers and her friends are having a particularly difficult time right now.

I hope people stop and think about the comments they choose to make on forums like this and think about how those comments can affect others. There is a time and place for joking, and believe me...this is not it!
