Bunch of nutters, but maybe they do some good in the world despite themselves. If Whaling is illegal in Korea, I assume they process meat from Japan and other Asian countries? I can't bare to sift through the site to find an answer...maybe I'll google it.
This made me chuckle though...

I haven't read much on the topic, but who eats whale? The Japanese? Koreans don't eat whale, do they ("stamina food" maybe? I'm so sick of that term )? I know Inuits eat whale, but is there really a demand for whale meat? [Side note: "Whale Rider" is one of my all-time favorite movies. Bawled my head off]
I hope someone torches that plant if it is ever fully constructed. |

koreans and japanese eat whale. I live in Ulsan and there are several Whale restaurants here. I know of one that is justa few blocks away from where I live. YOu can also buy whale meat at the local fish market. Not to mention that several restaurants especially raw fish restaurants will serve whale. |

whale is REALLY high in mercury and ddt and all those other really healthy toxins that bioaccumulate up the food chain. it's poet justice. i hope that people who eat whale lay eggs that have weak shells.
ulsan should not have a whale meat plant as it is illegal to hunt whale. why is there any discussion about it? |

see my mammals thread:
http://www.eslcafe.com/forums/korea/viewtopic.php?t=39004&start=75
A good variety of cetaceans pass through korean waters. Although korea has banned whaling decades ago, it "accidentally" captures hundreds each year by filling the ocean with all-destructive driftnets.
This "unintentional" bycatch which includes several endangered and internationally protected species, goes to fuel the whalemeat business here- of which Ulsan is the epicentre in Korea.
JAPAN is far worse: that is the problem. Koreans just have to say "Why can't we kill whales like the japanese are allowed to?", and the whole "Japanese get special treatment from the west" resentments kick in.
If Korea starts up whaling again, we can most probably kiss goodbye to the Grey whale, and the long term viability of several other species- the pressure on already threatened populations will be too great.
The best approach is to encourage Koreans to be seen as the good guys, adding blame and scorn on the Japanese who stubbornly persist in killing threatened species "for research purposes".
The japanese "survey" whale populations by killing them, then counting them. They openly call whales "The cockroaches of the sea" and blame declining fis stocks on whales, not seeing that their own coastal reclamations/environmental damage, overfishing and so on have been the cause.
-read a few of the links in my thread: there is no need for people to eat whales nowadays. Nor tiger bones, or bear bile... |

The Killer whale, at the top of the food chain, now accumulates more toxins than any other marine mammal. You may as well be eating a hawk that has just died from DDT poisoning.
This may be one of the more effective arguments against eating whalemeat... but time will tell. |

My husband said he ate whale meat a few times when he was in high school. It's not a big deal. Now if he said he went on a baby seal-clubbing rampage when he was a middle schooler, I might have been slightly distressed. |

Nope.
Whale meat (Minke whale) is a fatty, greasy meat with a strong aftertaste. A lot like seal meat.
Dolphin is a rich, dark meat with a smooth flavour. Very delicious.
Ate 'em both while I was in Iceland.
And you all criticize Koreans for having unadventurous eating habits. |

I have no problem with anyone eating anything: so long as its not endangered. |
