Is Kim Jong-Il Sane?

Quote:

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice said on Monday she did not know whether North Korean leader Kim Jong-il was sane, a remark that could anger Pyongyang's unpredictable ruler.

Asked if she thought Kim was sane during an interview with MSNBC's "Hardball with Chris Matthews," Rice replied: "I don't know. I've never met the man." The interview was taped on Monday and was to be broadcast on Tuesday.

According to the one book I've read on him, he's nowhere near as crazy as you'd imagine- and is certainly sane enough to realise that any kind of flexibility in his actions towards america could result in him being painted as weak by other people in NK, then forced out of power.

Just one author's opinion, but probably more accurate than the one in Team America.

He knows what he is doing...

If he didn't he wouldn't be able to stay in power for so long...the army would have overthrown him by now.

It really annoys me when high level officials doubt Kim Jong Ill's sanity. Pyongyang watchers, former diplomats, and high ranking defectors have been saying for years that Kim Jong Il is sane. Even Secretary of State Albright said "he was well briefed" or something to that effect. Kim Jong Il has been very clever, and astute despite only having a weak hand to play. Whether conservatives like it or not (and I am conservative) we must concede that Kim Jong Il plays a mean hand as far as foreign policy is concerned. If we were refering to domestic policy then he is certainly incompetent, but not insane. Rice I am afraid, has made a foolish remark. I am disappointed.

It's a very good point. Kim Jong Il is often described as being quite a "liberal" member of the North Korean government. Whether this is comestic or not is uncertain, but it was a fair point to make.

I think he knows how bad he looks though, did you ever hear the story of him being at an official dinner, turning to the lady next to him and saying

"Don't you think I look like a midget's turd?"

I think hes really quite smart... hes very well read too.
he knows exactly what he's doing, the main thing is keeping the dogs at bay. if the military had their way the war would have started along time ago

I think she said it as it is: She never had any kind of direct contact with him, so how could she know if he is sane or not?

It was provocative. Would she say the same about well known Western heads of state even if she hadn't met them? Surely she is aware that Albright met Kim Jong Il and reported that he was far from insane.
