Hi all. I have been reading alot of assault threads on the board lately and I think it would be a good idea to learn some key phrases.

I am a very small young woman. I am able to read hangul, but haven't ever had anyone teach me some good forceful phrases ( If i ever get put in a situation like that). I am sure there are other people on the board who are curious too.

Some good ones might be:

"Please leave me alone" or "Go away!"
"You are drunk"
"I don't want to argue"
"Don't touch me"
"Stop being foolish"

I would greatly appreciate any help. It might come in handy someday Smile Thanks again!

I will kindly put it in english since you can't read Korean
but bear in mind that if you directly translate them into Korean, they may sound silly, so I will rephrase them a bit

"Please leave me alone" or "Go away!"
Jul-ne-bi-du-se-yo or Ga-se-yo

"You are drunk"
Chee-ha-shut-so-yo

"I don't want to argue"
Mal-ha-gi-si-ro-yo

"Don't touch me"
Man-ji-ji-ma-se-yo

"Stop being foolish"
This one might trigger them to do more stupid things so I won't even bother trying to translate

Let me ask you some questions.
Where do you exactly live?
Because men don't really harass foreign women in most areas.
And some threads regarding assaults are exaggerated.
I guess people who have been assaulted before are the ones that work for hagwons or live in shitty areas.

But IF you are put in the situation, you can just ignore them and walk away as fast as you can or just say "ha-ji-ma-se-yo" and walk away.
The best way would be just ignoring them and walking away because if you show them that you can speak a little bit of Korean, they will be amused and try to talk to you even more.

I hope this helps

I disagree with trying to use korean in these instances

One of the things that exacerbates an already tense situation is to start throwing out broken Korean words/phrases. You may say something too politely (in a situation where a man is being byuntae and deserves to be spoken to like an animal) or too impolitely (in a situation where there is a misunderstanding and the Korean is simply trying to help you understand something)...

If you are in a situation that seems suspicious, speaking forcefully in English is one of your best weapons. I'm always amazed when i hear these stories and the victim says something like "I tried speaking to the person in Korean but it just made them angrier." I've talked to many many Koreans who feel threatened, almost violated by foreigners speaking korean. I've even had co-workers discourage me from taking Korean lessons because "it's not my language." If you are dealing with some irrational, drunk adjossi, this could very well be the straw that breaks the camels back.

Just be firm and confident...often times these guys get embarrassed when they can't understand what you are saying and walk off cursing you under their breath.

Whoa, are you ever off the mark- I just got assaulted near Gimpo airport. Exaggerated? I just got 500,000 won for mine, so I have to say that it was agreed upon that the guy needed to be punished. I don't work for a hakwon, either. You are obviously are not a woman. Damn, I need to carry around a hidden camcorder so people like you can see what it's like for foreign women. God, that was ignorant what you said.

Thankyou Gyo, But I would be able to understand the pronunciation if you wrote it in Korean. ( I did say i oculd read it Smile )

Sparxx, maybe you are right. I have never been in a bad situation, so I cannot say for sure which would work best for me. But I do wonder if the fact that they don't know what I am saying would make them care even less about their actions?

I think it is best to be prepared for anything. Thanks for the help so far guys, keep it coming! Smile

! *(Go!)
()? (You are drunken aren't you?)
Ƚο() (But I don't want to argue/fight - say in response to someone who appears to be after a fight/argument)
  ()! (Don't touch!)
óൿ ()! (Don't behave like a child)
ൿ! ()(Behave like an adult)

Warning - These expressions have been written in the least polite form of Korean. They should only be used if someone has been rude to you without any cause. If the offending party is much older than you, it is advisable to add more polite forms *() in order to show that you are above their antics, and still maintain some decency.

Some others worth remembering,

Ű澲 ()! (Loosely translated as "Mind your own business)
̷԰ϸŰҰſ (If you continue like this I will report you - use in more serious situations at home etc)

What does working in a hagwon have to do with being assaulted?

By the hagwon owner?

...you might NOT want to use the polite form.

ka-ba! (go away!-impolite imperative form)

go-jo! (fack off!-just plain rude, but forceful)

shittal! (no way)...sounds like "sheet-all"

tuh-ra-ga! (get out of here!)

na-wa! (I don't know, but my wife says it to the dogs all the time, so it can't be too polite)

Or if you're in really deep...you might appeal to Koreans around you who might think of foreigners as people...

toh-ah ju-sey-o (please help me)

I can't read Korean? Says who!

Right... you are an expert on where and when Korean men harass foreign women? Exaggerated? Walk a mile in our shoes before you say this kind of crap.

Working for hagwons makes you more likely to be harassed? Whatever!
