The Klan was America's version of Al Qaida.

Not quite Joo- the Klan was (and in parts of the South is) a political force whose political support and the votes of their members was (and sometimes is) widely sought. I noticed that 20 senators did not vote on the lynching resolution- want to take bets on how many were white Southern/Midwestern Republicans who did not want to upset their core supporters? 2 of the 20 were Trent Lott and Thad Cochran of Mississippi. (I couldn't find the other 18 names but I'm sure Jeff Sessions R-AL is one. Probably so is Bunning of Kentucky and Coburn of Oklahoma.)

Hey listen- I lived in Nashville, TN for six months while working for the state house of representatives. Every morning I would walk past a statue of the founder of the Ku Klux Klan in the lobby of the government building. The statue was put there by an ancient (and corpulent) Dixiecrat who remains as such to this day. Nobody has bothered to take it down. When the Republican governor of S. Carolina wanted to take the KKK flag down from the steps of the capitol, he lost to a Dixiecrat but not before getting a good beating from fellow GOPers. McCain lost in South Carolina largely because Karl Rove had locals spread rumors that McCain had a black son, a reference to a Bangladeshi orphan he had adopted.

The modern Republican party is based on the support of robber barons, southern/midwestern racists and so called Christian conservatives who have not spent much time feeding the poor and clothing the naked but have done plenty to condemn both. Al-Queda does not have that level of support in the U.S. with the possible exceptions of some mosques in Dearborn. Now, if you are comparing the political impact al-Queda has on M.Eastern governments to the impact the Klan had/has on the U.S. government, I agree with you.

I've been doing a lot of reading on John Brown lately. (I wanted to get a handle on the psychology of a terrorist.) Someone in Congress brought up designating a day for him. Trent Lott is reported to have answered, "Over my dead body".

My state had 150,000 members in the 1920s. Where am I from? Mississippi? Alabama? Arkansas?

Try
Maine

Quote:
In the 1920s, there was much action on building the forces of the KKK nationwide in the U.S., but Maine was one of the leaders in this activity. With 150,000 members in 1920, Maine possessed the largest, most active Ku Klux Klan outside of the south.

And the newest members of the coalition, the Neo-cons.

Oh yes. I forgot all about them. By the way, since we are striking a blow for freedom and democracy world wide, how's the China liberation project coming along?

Ah yes, another important step on the road to paying reparations with tax money to the "victims" of slavery. Rolling Eyes

He may not have wanted to upset the Indian-haters in his district.

I have a story from South Dakota that may (or may not) be relevant. When I was in college I met a girl who was dragged from her bed and forced to watch as her house was burned down on her parents. She was Sioux.
