Hey all. Been a lurker a while here, but I decided to join to pose this to you all: I've got a couple friends from Canada who are coming back to Korea to get married (been together for years, here and at home) because they met here. Awww, yeah and all that. They asked me to look into what they would need to do to get a quickie civil ceremony, recognised in Canada, I assume. They're not fans of big ceremonies, and they're just stopping in Korea to honeymoon in Thailand, so I guess they would be on tourist visas. Both are Canadian citizens.

So, anybody heard of two foreigners getting married here? What kind of hoops and paperwork do you have to go through?

I've heard of it happening and I know it is easy if you are American. I suggest they check the Canadian embassy's website. There may be the forms to download and information of documents needed. Otherwise just give the Canadian embassy a call and you might get better information that way.

Geez, lots of people seem to be in a marrying mood these days Very Happy The whole thing is pretty easy, especially if they're Canadians--they can get/ swear out their Certificate Of Eligibility of Marriage at the same time in the same embassy, as well as register their marriage (and get an English marriage certificate) afterwards the same way.
I suggest they get married in Seoul at the Jogno-Gu city hall--the staff will snap some cool polaroids of them all dressed up in Korean hanbok as a souvenir Very Happy

Check this thread for Foreigners-Getting-Married-In-Korea info:

Good luck to them both!

They are both Canadian? Easy! They just do paperwork at the Canadian Embassy, then get it all certified by this one Korean gov't office (sorry don't know the name). It shouldn't take more than a couple of hours!

Thanks for the info, all. And for the link, Canuckistan! Thought it would be a lot harder to do than that.
