|
|
One of the teachers at my academy is going to be fired and the director has come to me to ask for some "advice" -- Our contracts do not specifiy any time period of notice for termination, for either party. That is, if the employee OR the employer chooses to terminate the contract, it just says it will be done in "good faith" or something of that nature, without specifiying how long the notice period will be.
The director apporached me and asked me what I felt would be a "reasonable" amount of time to give to the teacher that will be terminated. I said that a month was reasonable, given the circumstances.
What does everyone else think? Is a month fair? |

30 days is pretty much the standard minimum amount of notice so it's hard to say who's in the wrong here. it would be easier on everyone if the director had accepted the teachers's notice with a sigh of relief but why do anything the easy way, right? |

One month, or if agreed to by the teacher, until the next pay period. Otherwise, one month for sure. Everyone should attempt to talk things out.
If the director is just honest and says, "hey, it's not working out.... maybe our age of students isn't right for you... I'll give you a release letter and give you time to find another job... we'll pay you all of your pay on XX date."
and maybe says, "I won't kill you with a bad reference..."
then the teacher will take it a lot better.
There is an old Korean proverb that says something like, "A cornered dog will lash out." I think if you don't corner the teacher, he/she will not lash out so readily. |
