US Defence Secretary Donald Rumsfeld has acknowledged that security in Iraq has not improved statistically since Saddam Hussein's fall in 2003.

One wonders whether it has been worth it so far.

It's too early still to assess what will happen. I think one can confidently say that the US administration has made a lot of mistakes thus far, but it remains to be seen how this will all wrap up. Two years is not giving a lot of time to indigenous forces in Iraq who want to resolve a critical ethnic split while establishing some kind of viable liberal state.

Say what you want about the US' conduct, but to give up on the Iraqis so soon under such pressure seems unfair.
