I just bought a new laptop, Compaq Presario, Celeron chip.
Brought because it was cheaper, and better than the others in my small town Hi-mart.
But it is so slow when you want to run programs or do more than one thing at a time, It lags when you X off a running program.
The internet is great no problems there.
I did a disk defragment, and there is only about 25% of the computers mem space taken up, mostly with music.
What can I do to speed up the programs and make it faster when I click on something thats not the internet.
Retard level language please |

You need to include proessor speed i.e. P4 2.0
Ram how much?
what programs are you using and how many at one time. |

What do you expect you bought a laptop with a friggen celeron in it. They are cheap shiet. On top of that its a Compaq. You got what you paid for.
Just to let you know Celeron is the biggest trash that intel has. |

Its 1.3 ghz, and 40gb of RAM.
Its really not a terrible computer, I dont run websites Im mostly just a surfer, and listen to music and watch DVD's.
Its an XP, brand new and the only programs Im using are Kazaa lite, and the normal winXP programs.
The internet is not slow at all, but when I click off something it will do that slow run down the screen, I hate that and just want an all round semi quick computer, Its not a P4 so I understand that but it should be faster than it is. |

Running Kazaa will slow everything to a crawl -- only use it when you aren't using the computer for anything else. |

You got a brand new computer with a Celeron 1.3Ghz? That doesn't sound right. 40GB of RAM? I do hope you mean that's your hard drive.
But yeah, if you do have a Celeron 1.3, you're not gonna be able to do much.

Here's the clue...

you're clearly mixing up disk space with memory. How much stuff you have on your hard disk drive is not going to affect how your computer functions until you start hitting the 90%+ mark (even if that).
But how much RAM you have is going to be key because RAM (the M is memory) is what enables you to run multiple programs at once and what is accessed intensively when you start and stop programs.
So, yeah, you need to find out how much RAM you have and, like kprrok, I'm sure you were quoting your disk size. You're looking for a number like
128Mb
256Mb
512Mb
but I don't think you are going to have anything higher than 256Mb from the sounds of it... well I'd be surprised if you do... |

Up your Ram, and you will find the speed increase you need.
I have looked at the different low-end Compaq laptop offers, and it looks like you got the model with 256 Megs of Ram. Windows XP needs a minimum of 256 (that's not enough, either), and even still at least 512 is recommended. Dell computers, for example often sells their computers with just 256megs of ram, and they used to sell them with just 128. Hardly enough to do anything with XP, but it made for a good advertising price on a website.
I believe this is probably the exact model you have: http://www.futureshop.ca/catalog/proddetail.asp?sku_id=0665000FS10059498&catid=22495&logon=&langid=EN&test%5Fcookie=1
If your laptop has 256 Megs or less, then your computer is having to store everything it can't fit into Ram on the hard drive, and it's having to access it over and over again -- slowing everything to a crawl. This laptop's hard drive runs at 4200 RPMs, which is slow, making that access even more painfully slow.
That model shows it maxes out at 1 Gig of ram. You should have another open ram slot in it, so buy another 256 or 512 Meg of ram to put in the other slot, and you'll be a happy camper!
I'd suggest you go for 512 Megs more of memory, especially with programs like Kazaa, MSN, Yahoo, a virus checker, etc., that can be running in the background -- but you don't have to if you don't want to sink much more into it. 256 Megs more will still bring about a noticable difference.
Yes, a 1.3 Celeron isn't a fast chip, but with at least 512 Megs of Ram, I'm sure you'll be able to do everything you want at a much nicer pace. Of course you won't be video editing, but hey... that's not what you bought it for!
If you can afford it, buy another 512 Megs of ram for that other slot. |

Just checking prices on notebook Ram from www.enuri.com , you'd be paying about $55 and up a bit for 512Meg of PC2100 Ram (266mhz) which is probably what your computer has.
I'd imagine the Korea prices aren't a whole lot different, but they might be a bit more. Seeing as you're a novice, you should take the computer iwth you to the store to have them put it in for you, probably. I read that Compaq used to put some kind of funky plastic piece over the extra ram slot. Removing that piece, if it's on your model, might scare you a little from what I've read about it. Installing it at the shop would take them less than a minute, most likely.
And shop around. I have a feeling that Ram from Compaq is going to be a lot more expensive than the stuff from about anywhere else. |

Celeron 1.3 ghz = great wordprocessor
P4m or Centrino (if you were to stay with Intel), would have been more appropriate for your uses.
All you can really do is up your RAM, as Derrek suggested. I would also recommend getting a program called MemTurbo. This program will free memory space for memory deficient systems AND, as a new option, has a CPU excellerator and VRAM tuner. It sounds to me like this kind of program would benefit you a lot, look into getting it. |
