I was watching TV tuesday and I was watching one of those 'human interest' shows that showcases the lives of ordinary koreans. the first segment was about a highschool girl who was training to become a K1 type fighter. it was OK. but the second segment was bizarre. It was about this grandfather who drinks about 13 or 14 bottles of soju a day. Mind you, this is a documentary type show, all of it was apparently real. You should have seen this guy. He'd wake up in the morning, pour about 2 shots of soju into a glass, add about a shot's worth of milk, and drink it to start the day. Then throughout the day he'd drink soju, either out of a big drinking glass or from some oversize shot glass. it showed him carrying around his infant grandson, all red faced and droopy eyed, plodding along while being completely smashed. He seems to spend half the day sitting outside just getting rocked, repeatedly asking his 4 year old grandaughter to go fetch him more soju, which she pronounces . then he goes and passes out on a mat periodically. and of course while he has dinner he polishes of a couple more bottles. And the whole time there's a happy music playing in the background of the show and there's a laughtrack, like this man's sad wasted life is a fucking riot.

basically the plot of the show was an attempt on the part of his daughter and grandchildren to get him to stop drinking. it shows a lot of big discussions between them about his drinking, and his daughter pours out all the soju in the house. i'm not really sure how it go resolved. the show just seemed to end with him being drunk as ever.

the interesting thing was the guy seemed to handle all the booze well. i mean, he was obviously drunk, but in a low key, non-creepy kind of way. and this guy, who i think was 68, could do like 30 pushups while being totally sh*tfaced.

apparently he started drinking like that when his wife died 10 years ago.

anyways, anybody see that one?

You've just described every 68 year old Korean man. That's why it's so funny. Everyone's like, hey, there's grandpa!

Why is it that alcoholism isn't a big issue here? One of the reasons why I didn't marry my ex-fiance was because his father was a mean drunk. His family made excuses. He had half of his pinky finger cut-off in an industrial accident 30 years ago, and they blame his drinking on that. They said his "disability" kept him from receiving promotions over the years.

Double "ouch"!

That would probably make me an alcoholic, too, though. Injured in the service of my company, which then skips over me while everyone else rises up the corporate ladder? *beep* that & pass the soju! Mad

Hey, when his goody-goody family are in their late 60s and can still do 30 push-ups, then they can tell him what to do.

Right guys?

*holds up hand for a high five*

Right? Hello? Guys?

Well, I don't know all the details, but I'm not a big fan of cop-outs. I've heard the excuse for all these old guys is that their lives were hard in the PAST. I think that's so lame. It seems like the mentality here is that if you face a hurdle in life, you don't try to get over it. You either jump off a building (IMF crisis businesspeople jumpers, suicide clubs, for example), or you run away (well, the former Daewoo chairman did return last week- after what, 6 years in self-imposed 'exile"), or you drown youself in alcohol. Great solutions. Really.

Yeah, I watched that show and then I watched that show, "Who's Real? Game" or whatever it's called. The theme for this week was to figure out which young person among all the young moms and dads was really a high school student (all were dressed in high school uniforms). It was kind of funny, actually. I guess the theme for next week is who's the overseas kyopo hidden among all the Koreans.

I actually find Korean TV much more funny than Japanese TV. The Korean mean sense of humor is preferable to the Japanese lack of humor (and no, I'm not talking about all people, just the fake people on TV). I'd rather watch Korean TV than Japanese any day, even when I've had an "I hate Korea" day like today.

I thought it was my husband on telly again (usually Crimewatch), until you mentioned that he drank because his wife died. I'm still very much alive. Maybe they meant one of his mistresses?
