Ok, so this will probably be deleted, but....
Anyone know how to copy a DVD (Stateside now, so DVD aplenty at Bockenbuster's)? I tried, but sirens keep going off, helicopters fly over my house, and an old Haitian woman trowin' bloody chicken bones at my window.
There's GOT to be a way around this....at $3 a rental, I want my monies' worth! (and will pass them on ta yis)....
Shoosh,

| I should kick you for supporting that chain that came in, charged less, knocked every decent local place out, then raised the charge 200%. At least I heard they are struggling and may go under. Why don't you rent at a supermarket? |

Actually, only rented from them once....'twas across the street, 'twas drunk, so couldn't drive anywhere else.
I would still like to know how to rip 'em....despite the codes. Actually, CDs are easy...are DVD's the same way?
Yes, I've a DVD recorder, and use Roxio and/or Nero.
Shoosh!

Go here and download a copy of Smart Ripper. It'll get rid of the DECSS protection and extract the VOB files for you. Depending on the DVD make sure you have around 5-6 GB of space freed up. Burn all those files you extracted to a blank DVD and voila, you've got a copy. |

No thanks, Ryst You're talking to the DivX kid here, I can't just rip the movie, oh no, I have to spend around 16 hours compressing the video and then remixing the audio into it. 700 Meg size with very little quality loss and away I go! Chip an X-Box for a media computer that can stream the movies off of a network and you've got a pretty sweet setup. |

Hank your post brings up a question that's been floating around in the back burner of my mind for some time:
How does one go about converting a divx or xvid (is that the right acronym for the popular new format?) video file in such a way that it can be burned onto a DVD and played on a tv top player? Does anyone have a link they could point me to? Or will Smart Ripper do this as well? |

Superhero just answered it. There are faster ways to do it; some of the programs on that link I provided will get you to some programs that can do it for you. Nero is simple, though. Time consuming, but simple. |

Sometimes you have to convert the ripped Xvid/Divx file's audio to an uncompressed format. After that, TCMPEG (sic) can convert the "avi" to an mp2 file and any Dvd burning sofware can take it to DVD from there.

I used DVD-Shrink 2.1, along with Nero Classic to burn.
Totally free. |

| There are several DVD players on the market that play DIVX, Windows Media, etc... I've got one. It is region-free, too. I bought it at Carrefor. It's a Silady brand. |
