I'm trying to figure out a way to conduct preliminary research on two potential topics for an M.A. thesis: Korean travel and tourism and childhood anthropology in Korea. I will explore the first topic when I take a month to travel around Korea in September, but I'm not sure how to go about the latter topic. I have a lot of free time in the afternoons which I've been filling up with language exchanges and prep for PhD applications. But I could definitely use my time to try to observe Korean child-rearing trends. I am thinking of putting up posters or posting on websites (in Korean and English) that I would like to exchange an hour of English tutoring for an hour of observation of family interaction with children. It would be best to get a broad sampling, observing families all over the Seoul area. Where are some Korean internet bulletin boards where I could post? Any other ideas about how to reach people? Do you think families would be receptive to this kind of exchange situation (I wouldn't be taking any money for the English tutoring)?
Thanks! |

Um...what?
Yes, I'm legit, trying to do research, and female with experience teaching kids.
What's the problem exactly? |

Anyone else have any input about places to post online (or just good places to physically put signs up) to reach Koreans? Surely somebody must know somewhere...
Thanks... |

Hello there, good luck on your thesis. Korea is an interesting place. If you are not teaching it may be hard to find yourself in a position to really observe. And you may want to consider not telling the people what you are doing (Most of the Koreans I know will act in a way that you will want them to act, same as most places). If you just 'get out there' you will probably find yourself in the right place. I have been here for 2 years and was afraid of what to expect, but Korean people are nice. |

Bits-
Thanks for that advice...
However...does anyone know any online classifieds for Koreans where I can post (even just a language exchange thing to be more subtle about the fact that I'm doing research)?
