After attaining a moderate level of literacy (reading but not understanding) I asked my wife what exactly is "ddong twaeji". She explained that this meat is a delicacy brought to us from Jaeju, where some resourceful Korean decided that feeding pigs human waste would not only save him a few bucks, but would also result in truckloads of premium pork.

Is she having some fun with me? Is it true that, in addition to "fan death", Koreans have offended logic once again by feeding food animals human excrement?

I bet these restaurants signs read:

"Fortifies men, liberates women!!!"

"Better than viagra...your new-found stamina will leave your wife, girlfriend, and your favorite salon girls twitching and moaning in ecstasy."

It's true... I don't think that it's as common as it once was, but it exists nonetheless...

Apparently, every home used to have one of these "ddong-dwayjis" which was permenatly kept under the outhouse (imagine sitting down with a pig snout a foot or two away snorting... Shocked )... As times change, and outhouses became less common, I assume the ddong-dway-ji isn't as common as it once was...

Anyway, it's supposed to be somewhat of a delicacy... Sounds gross, but that's the way it was (and still) may be...

Wow, just like the Flintstones.

Did each house have mini-elephants to wash dishes too?

Maybe they can throw that dog poo girl to the pigs. I bet she'd make a great tasting bacon sandwich.

Yep, it's real and you can see restaurants specializing in it all over Jeju. Many of my students claim that it is delicious and that they love to eat it.

I tried some in Jeju a few years ago and found it to be pretty tasty.

I second that. The poo piggy meat I had in a restaurant on Jeju was DELICIOUS too.

I stayed in a house overnight in Papua-New Guinea, built on stilts, and here you didn't even hafta find a hwajangshil, just a hole in the floor and pigs below would rush up for the delicacy soon as it hit the ground. Likewise, the houseboats in Dal Lake, in Srinagar, Kashmir had toilets that emptied into the lake. When you were finished you could look down and see your turds attacked by hordes of tiny fishes. Don't know if the locals caught and ate that variety of fish.....

Why? It's not as if you're the one that is eating the dung.

In a way it is. Where do you think the sweet taste comes from?

But with all the antibiotics, growth hormones and other chemicals used in the production of meat back home... an ecologically-sound crap-eating pig almost sounds yummy.

It appears that is not only the pigs that are full of sh*t. Razz
Though technically you are not eating sh*t I suppose, it is about as close as you can get. Call me culturally insensitive or whatever but I am never eating that knowingly. Many countries around the world are known for their fine cuisine. Koreans have sh*t stuffed pork. Well done Korea...

but the pig doesn't just pack away bits of shit in its meat after he eats it, it gets thoroughly processed by the pig's digestive system. They shit too, and you wouldn't want to eat that, but i don't see eating pigs who eat shit as eating shit. You're eating the product of the pig's metabolism, nothing more.
