|
|
So today I decided to face the crowds, the chaos and the frustration of the Department Store and go shopping for some new summer clothes. If the lack of decent, stylish, reasonably-priced clothing in itself isn't enough of a headache and frustration, I had to deal with the Size Problem.
I actually found a really cute summer dress in Tommy Hilfiger. Although insanely overpriced, seeing as there wasn't ANYTHING ELSE in the entire Department Store to buy, I figured why not.
I find my size, take it to the changeroom. Sales girl takes it off the hanger, and looks at the size. She gasps. "OH! But...this dress size is zero!!" I said, "Yes, I know."
She says "But...." and pulls that confused look and tilts her head to the side like I've asked her to perform advanced calculus in her head. " This dress size very small!" I said, "Yes, I know. This is my size. I am very small."
She can't comprehend this. And amazingly, she is standing right in front of me, LOOKING AT ME. She can SEE my approximate size right in front of her face. She says, "But, this size maybe not for western woman. This size for Korean woman." She wouldn't hand me the dress.
I said, "Well, this is the size I wear. " She still wouldn't give me the dress. "May I please try the dress?" She still is thinking about it, totally absolutely DUMBFOUNDED about the whole situation. "But, I think this dress too small for you. Very very small dress."
I was beginning to get angry, but amazingly kept my temper (which I do tend to lose now and again....) I said "LOOK at me. I am a very small woman. I would like to try this dress please!" The reality being that it was a 300,000 won dress, and you would think that in a store that has clothing priced that high, they would actually want to, oh I don't know -- SELL SOMETHING.
She gave me the dress, but was still scratching her head about it. I went in to the changeroom, tried it on, and low and behold, the frigging thing is TOO BIG FOR ME. About an inch of seam around the hips that should be snugly fitted, sticking out on either side, and the same around the stomach. So I took it off and gave it back to her, thinking it's a done issue.
OHHHhhh nooooo. She is very happy when I come out and she says, "It's too small, yes?" And I told her that no, it was TOO BIG. She either didn't listen, or didn't comprehend, because she went over and got me a bigger size in the dress -- and I said to her, "NO, *this* dress is TOO BIG." She doesn't believe me. "No, this dress size is size zero, smallest size. So you need more largeee." This whole thing went on for a while. Although because I was in my own clothes, could have just walked out, I was SOOOO frustrated, and couldn't BELIEVE the stupidity, rudeness, lack of common sense, etc etc etc of her, I grabbed the original dress back, stomped into the changeroom (temper begining to fade... ) and put the too-big-for-me-size-zero dress on.
Walk out of the changeroom, she gasps. It's CLEARLY TOO BIG for me. I said nothing, but held my arms out so she could see, and then went back in and put my own clothes on.
As I walked out, she was still standing there holding the dress with her mouth wide open. |

Why didn't you just buy the dress and have it altered?

Cause I suspect that the alterations would have cost about 50,000 won, as it needed quite a bit in some places, and some of the pleats were intricate.
Seeing that it was already a 300,000 won dress..... is Tommy Hilfiger REALLY worth 350,000 won???? Hardly. |

Ugh! I HATE THAT. Literally blinded by ignorance.
Same thing happened to me. I wanted to try on a pair of shorts in Nowon and they were out of Mediums, so I asked to try on a Small.
The girl kinda laughed and said:
...Large OK...Small No.
I said:
small yes. Large too big for me. I can wear small. Do you mind if i can just TRY?
SHe said:
You no small, large OK
After much deliberation I just grabbed the small from her and stormed into the dressing room, praying that they would fit so I would not prove this skank right.
The shorts fit perfectly so I walked out and said....seee???
She was quite embarassed and surprised (she checked the tag again when I bought them, completely befu**led that this western monstrocity could fit into such delicate clothing meant for pure and petite women), and pretended the whole thing hadn't happened.
It's pathetic when people can't look past stereotypes even when it is staring them right in the face. |

See, that's exactly it. When I was standing there, it did cross my mind that she was worried that I would rip the dress by trying to squeeze into it when it was too small, but when you held the dress up in front of me, there was NO WAY that this thing would be too small. And, at 30 years old, I'm a bit more mature than to try to squeeze into something that I am not going to be able to get off, or rip some seams. It was when her logic was that the main reason this was not going to fit me was because I am not Korean, and therefore I am fat.
You know, I try sooo hard not to make generalizations about Koreans, and to accept the whole "different culture, different mentality" thing, but honestly, sometimes, they make it so frigging hard! |

Nah. This has nothing to do with culture. The girl was an ignorant moron. If I ran a store and refused to sell Asian girls anything bigger than an A cup bra that would have nothing to do with my 'culture' or 'mentality'.
Anyway, I'm sorry that happened. Good luck clothes shopping! |

Tell me about it. I'm amazed at how expensive name brand clothes such as Polo and Lacoste are. I went to Samsung Plaza last weekend and was tempted to buy a polo shirt -- until I saw the price tag. 89,000 won? You gotta be kidding me. Polo isn't exactly cheap back home, but the same shirt would be at least 2/3 the price, if not half.
I'm better off having the folks ship Polo gear to me. Or buying knock-offs in Itaewon for 10,000 won.

The salespeople here can be really stupid. They do the same thing to me when I go to the counter to buy something in a small. They will say to me small size? I say yes and then buy it. I don't even try arguing with them. One girl got angry when she asked me if small was OK because I muttered stupid under my breath and she heard...hahaha!!! Some of us white gals can wear size zero and one believe it or not. They just see a white face and think FAT. They don't even pay attention to your body. Not all Korean women are THAT small. I guess some people here have warped ideas that the biggest Korean girl is still smaller than any whitey...puhleeeeze!!! |

I just think it's funny that our A cup is their B cup, and so on down the line...
Trying to boost the confidence a little maybe? |
