Great news. A historic day.

They've done a lot of horrible damage in the past. But in recent years they've moved into more gangster type activity but there have still been some pretty nasty incidents.
It may never have happened without Clinton, that guy really helped the peace process. |

A temporary ploy, to maintain support. I can't believe the IRA would stop the armed struggle before a united Ireland. They will keep a paramilitary capability, no doubt about it- and use if necessary.
Their problem is that Al-Quaeda has made them look bad. I doubt many americans are keen on funding terrorism, of any kind, after 9/11. |

What is the percentage of protestants in Northern Ireland now?
I read it as 58%
That is the sticking point of re-unification. If the majority of people in Northern Ireland actually wanted to be part of a republic life would be very easy. Likewise if almost half the population didn't want to, life would be very easy. |

My skepticism is based on having lived 4 years in Northern Ireland.
American support is all important for McGuiness and Adams, as they make the transition from terrorists to world statesmen.
I can never envision "life being very easy there". Too much distrust and hatred for that now. The future of protestants must be ensured.
Might I just add that Belfast is the most happening,interesting city in Britain.

Wow. Indeed...seems the Middle East is well on its way as well with the scheduled Gaza strip withdraw...ALL ya need is love...bah bah dah dah dah. |

AQ made them look bad  I think blowing up lots of innocent people in horrific bomb attacks made them 'look bad'. Enniskillen (spelling) was a hideous attack, behaving like gangsters and smuggling drugs and buying weapons from Libya made them look bad. In a way 911 was good for Britain, it made so called Irish Americans realise that funding disgusting terrorist groups is not a cool thing to do.
Hopefully the hideous London bombing incidents will wake up the -largely decent and respectable- Mulslim community in the UK to not give aid or support to scumbag terrorists.
Freedom fighters are the people who came from around the globe to fight fascism in Spain, terrorists dont care who they kill.
The IRA has been well behaved in recent years. They're smart enough to realise that bombings, maimings and other nasty stuff will not win them an inch of compromise, they've done the smart thing. Hopefully this will be a message to the idiot jihad types.
There may be a few splinter groups but the majority of IRA people will tow the party line. The IRA used to be so bad they sent intelligence to Germans in WWII.
Peace is my dream, not just in NI but the world. It's inlikely to happen because of a minority of egocentric scum. It's a shame different cultures can learn so much from each other. |

As far as I can see also, the IRA have to do this if they want to continue to exist as an organization. 'The struggle' has become little more than grubby council estate rivalry. |

| I think praise must also be heaped on succesive British governments who never yielded anything to Irish republican terrorism. They stood firm for decades, and finally we are enjoying one of the most promising moments in Northern Irish history. |
