They said on TV that Shelby Foote died. He was 88.
If you watched Ken Burns "The Civil War", you remember Shelby Foote as the older guy who told wonderful stories about the war.
If you don't know him, he was a fiction writer who turned to writing a brilliant 3 volume history of the Civil War. History written by a writer. The best of both worlds.
PS: Anyone read Bernal Diaz's "The Conquest of New Spain"? I started it the other day. Terrific adventure story. I'd tried it years ago by a different translator. Not readable. This Penguin edition is great.
Can anyone tell me what it is about 15th Century Spaniards climbing walls to get to their girlfriends? Both Ferdie (pre-Isabella) and Cortez did it. The wall collapsed while Cortez was climbing and he got a concussion and missed the ship to Hispanola.
[Nit pickers: Yes, I know the 15th Century is not technically Current Events, but I'm reading the book now, so it is current to me.] |
