|
|
I received this email today about the busts. It was sent to some teacher from the recruiter who brought him to Korea. I think it has been forwarded throughout a large portion of the ESL community here (this is the 2nd time I have reveived it).
Anyhow, FYI:

And... here's what happened last Thursday. It's a little serious.
The immigration caught about 17 teachers at Star Tower which is
located right at Yeoksam station in Kangnam on the 16th. Most of them
were teaching at NHN Corp (known as Naver.com) in the building.
Currently the immigration is targeting on teachers who's working
illegally at major companies like Hyundai, LG, Samsung...etc... And it
will happen a couple of times more until the end of August.
So it's really dangerous to have classes at those huge companies in
Kangnam and City Hall and currently their HR departments are trying to
shut down their English classes with foreigners. . If you have company classes, BE CAREFUL UNTIL THE END OF AUGUST.
I heard this from good authority.
Take care.

And they will!!
"The Crackdown" is like every other Korean crackdown. Like the prostitution crackdown recently. It's temporary. Everything will go back to normal very soon.
Koreans don't do 'follow up' very well. |

Does anyone know why these huge companies would hire illegal English teachers? I'm sure they could do it all legally and above board and it might even work out cheaper in the long run. |

Read that passage again, and pay specific attention to the words in bold and you may be able to answer that question. |

I asked a recruiter that one once.
The reason is that the classes are often arranged by English "clubs" of people, or people from a specific office within the company, who get together and pool money, then set it up to meet in one of the company's conference rooms.
So these teachers often aren't technically working for the parent company, although they are teaching on-site at that company.
It's often not the "company" doing it. |

Of course if it is done on company property with the company's knowledge, the company can still hang. |
