Ugh...

I purchased a new External HD case and a Seagate 200 gig HD today from Yongsan. The HD didn't work. I switched the jumper... tried all settings, actually, and no luck. Even pulled my current HD from my computer and tried to format/install windows onto the new HD. No luck. The format just shot up to 20% and hung there forever.

Now I'm going to have to make a 2 hour trip back to Yongsan.. ugh. Hope they replace it without any problems! The thing that bugs me is the drive has a few extra stickers on it in Korean that make me wonder if it's a refurbished drive. THAT would tick me off. It's supposed to be a new one.

I tried another old drive in my external case, and that one worked fine, by the way.

That you were able to get a different hard drive to work in the external case is vital info here.

I think you're probably right about the new hard drive being bad, but you should take the external case with you when you return it.

I bought a large HD from one of the little street-side shops in Yongsan with the stipulation that they format it. They weren't too pleased with the idea but were quick to agree when I suggested that the shop next door was willing. Wink

Is the case supporting of 200Gig drives?

Because if you've used a smaller sized HD in the case then that might be the reason why that one worked ok. Not all HD cases support all sizes of drives.

Try to find the case specs online. If you bought both case and HD from the same vendor then I'd just take them both back, so he can deal with it and get them working. Not meaning to sound Korean but if he's sold both of them together then it's his problem if the stuff is incompatable.

If you need to go back, I'd just try and get your money back. Theres nothing worse than havng a HD that you don't trust. your Data is important, a backup is something you should have but something that you never want to be releying on. Those stickers would make me nervious of the HD didn't format.

The more bad stuf I hear about Korea the more I'm thinking of purchaseing my HD from the states. Just don't like the idea of having it sent in the mail.

back in Canada I worked at an electronics wearhouse and it is a well known industry fact that 10-20% of electronic products ship defective. It probably got damaged in shipping or something. Just change it no big deal.

I plugged the drive into my IDE port and ran a diagnostics program I downloaded from Seagate. It is definately a defective drive. Guess I'll be making another 2 hour trek to Yongsan today!

They build computers at that shop I got it from, so I'll have them plug in and test the new one before I leave.

Yes, I worried about if the box supported a 200 gig drive, but I know that's not the problem, since I ran a diagnostics test off of my IDE port. I looked all over the box and online and found nothing related to whether or not the box would support only up to a certain drive size. It's the newer model box, though.

Still, that one bugs me, but I have decided that I will remove my old 80gig HD from my computer and do a full re-install on the new drive and make that my main HD. I'll pop the 80gig into the external case, and there should be no problem. The old 80gig was orginally formatted under 98SE, and is the old style of format that only accepts up to 4gig files. It's not preferrable for video editing, which is what I plan to do anyway.

Gosh, I hate re-installing Windows and all of the oodles of programs I have! Some I won't have to re-install, but most I will! This will eat up an entire day!

Yeah, me too but twice a year is worth it. I always schedule it during vacation and then it's like I have a fresh brand new computer come the beginning of hte semester. It's also always nice to see a performance increase with fewer programs installed.

Yeah, I'll second that. It easily takes up a whole day. When I get my next HD I'm going to image my freshly reinstalled laptop so that all I will have to do for teh next reinstall is copy the image across and update the programs when I go online. Loads of my programs update automatically online anyways.

Think yourself lucky that you've found out teh HD is a lemon. Nothing worse than having something that might be ok yet might not be. If I were you I'd take the diagnostic tool to the place you bought the drive and run it on the new drive they give you. If I were you I'd insist on a drive without the extra stickers if it makes you feel more comfortable.

I'd still get a seagate drive even if the one you have at the mo is a Lemon. I think seagate make the best drives. If your worried about the drive being refurbished I think you can enter teh model number and serial nuber of the drive on their website to look at its details and see if its refurbished and how much warrenty it has. I'm guessing everyone at yongsan has a net connection.

Well, they took it back -- no questions asked. I got my cash back and bought a new Maxtor drive from another store.

Hope this works... gonna pull the current HD and spend the next several hours reloading XP.

Call me crazy, but i was afraid of getting another Seagate 200 Gig drive, in case it was from a lot of bad drives that had been dropped or something.

Always had luck with Maxtor, anyway.

I've had more stuff get toasted in well-packed luggage from North America to Korea than I've experienced defective goods purchased from Korean online vendors. These things happen, and when they've happened to me the stores followed up appropriately, as Derrek's store did. Your post makes it seem like these problems are common in Korea. This has not been my experience.

I'm no longer in Korea but continue to purchase from Korean on-line stores (stuff gets shipped to my parents in law) and I do so with confidence.
